Lower timing chain gasket replacement cost

Post by TimG30si » Wed May 11, 2022 5:09 pm

Hi, hoping someone might be able to offer some advice.

I’ve had a small oil leak on my z4m, and have just had a garage investigate the source.

They’re telling me it’s the lower timing chain gasket that needs replacing, but that to do it is 20 hours labour, plus it will need new head gaskets, coolant, timing adjustment etc etc. altogether they’re quoting nearly £2.5k which shocked me!!

Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue and can confirm if it’s really such a massive job?

Thanks

What is the mileage of the engine? Are they advising additional preventative maintenance whilst they are in there?

ouch, not something i hear of often .... wonder if its something higher and trickling down, unfortunately these engines are not cheap to maintain when they go wrong.

It’s on 82k. I’ve recently done rod bearings and vanos (at a different garage), they didn’t mention any preventative maintenance on the phone but I’m going to see them tomorrow morning so they can show me the issue and what they are proposing to do…
