Noise insulation, sound deadening, rattle fix Z4 E89 (35is)

Post by taranfx » Mon Jun 11, 2018 10:14 pm

So I bought a 2011 35is a week ago. First things first, started the noise insulation and sound deadening process.

These are my objectives:

Sound deadening and insulation on:
1. Doors
2. Trunk area
3. Thin plastic areas
4. Roof

And
5. Fix rattles with felt, CCF tapes throughout the body. :headbang:

Materials used:
- 80 mil Butyl sheets for reducing resonance and lot of thin metal noises. https://amzn.to/2JC2D6O
- CCF sheets for sound insulation https://amzn.to/2LGo4Eh
- Felt, CCF tapes [Home depot]

** this thread will be updated as I make progress ** :poke:

1. Doors
Open the door cardboard (follow bavsound guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnyP_-vs3T4).
Next, unscrew the speakers

Then add butyl sheets to outer door panel

Repeat for doorwell subwoofer

and rear side speakers

2. Trunk area
Half-open roof state

Remove the lining by pulling the plastic trim screws out. (you need a metallic trim removal tool for this)

5. Rattles
Man source of rattles are:
i. Dashboard
ii. dome light
iii. rollover protection covers

i. Dashboard
To unscrew the dashboard trim, follow http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1148144.
Its roughly 7-8 screws.

Unscrew two more to release the center air vents and add tape to that too..

ii. Dome light
Dome light is pretty easy to remove. Use flat trim remover and tuck it in to pull it out about 1-2" on each side. Then using two fingers on the right, press-in and release the clip and whole thing will come out.

Add some to the compartment as well

Hey taranfx,

Any chance you can update your post so all the photos show? - some of them are missing.

This is on my to do list so will be very helpful.

Done all that already, doesn't make a fat lot of difference to be honest.

Ah, that's disappointing. This is by far the (road) noisiest car I've ever had.

Most rattles reduced by spraying silicone all around all panel gaps. The rft are noisy, better with normal.
I would guess i probably just got used to any noise reduction from the padding.

Forgive me if I'm being a doofus, but I'm not sure what you mean by spraying silicone around the panel gaps.

Already on normal tyres. Never liked RFT's, and neither did the previous owner.

Every joint on dashboard, all plastic panels. I even had to spray behind iDrive to stop a rattle.
Sun visors tap on plastic. Also coat all rubber trim.
I actually use some bumper shine stuff, i think Turtlewax. Does the job.

Possibly won't update as this thread is 3 1/2 years old with no follow up since!
