Garage recommendations to fit supercharger
I'm planning on upgrading my brakes at some point. I've already fitted coilovers & some wider wheels (10" rears).Barrett.d wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 2:07 pm Apart from rod bearings and a general service , what other work is needed before installing a supercharger. Does the clutch need uprating or is oem up to the job ? Also drive shafts , diff . Or any other bits that need uprating apart from brakes and suspension? Ess 525 needs to happen in the summer , just need to know how much more I need to spend on other bits

I'm always surprised the gearbox gets no mention in these s/c conversions given the ZF S6-37 trans we have is rated to a max of 273lbf-ft, and whilst it is fitted to a 320d or 520d it was not fitted to any 30d variants which comftably exceed this torque limit as would a blown s54Barrett.d wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 2:07 pm Apart from rod bearings and a general service , what other work is needed before installing a supercharger. Was wondering what I could "get away with " . Is the gearbox something that needs doing prior to install or something that can be left until the old one fails ? What are the uptions regarding uprating the gearbox ? Thanks

No idea really I'm afraid. I think most just use the stock unit and hope for the best?

That’s a good point about the box.
I guess people assume that because it can be a bit of a notchy t**t, it’s strong! Can’t say I’ve read of any failures, but then these aren’t exactly common cars/conversions, or typical daily drivers so who knows how long they’d last.
It’s always a gamble adding big power to virtually any car but a bit of mechanical sympathy goes a long way.

Isn't his a 3.0? I think even charged they make less torque than a stock S54 so I can't see that he would have run into this torque limit. With an ess525 kit on an S54 you'll be looking at 340lb-ft or so? That is fine in an e46m3 as that runs the Getrag box which is good for 370 lb-ft, not so great for a charged Z4M with the ZF box.

Yes I thought he had the ess525 kit (I think there is one other car on here s/c but not sure?) so I expect he'll chime in. It's of no interest to me other than from a technical pov but I'm sure others might have questions for him!markplant wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 5:45 pmOr ask beedub his a z4m supercharged around 500bhp iircTomK wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 10:30 amIsn't his a 3.0? Enjoy, a properly sorted charged & cooled s54 is a badass thing indeed! Box will be fine I'm sure, and if you rip it up there is a miriad of boxes you could use the internals of to replace. I expect the various designations of part number reflect starter motor mounts or something like that, i.e the outer casing is the difference which should presumably be saved in this kind of situation.

im popping in ..... not around too much at the mo as work is bonkers.
i have ESS kit one of the few here in the UK, its also been uprated past the stages available. fabulous setup but if you plan to use an s54 with boost properly its going to need some work.
oil cooling - i have setrab large oil cooler setup.
drive shafts i have DSS 1000hp rear half shafts.
gearbox i had made no changes but the clutch died very quickly.
power has been recorded as high as 557hp but as low as 525 with heat soak set in .
Any specific questions please fire away most of the car has now been modified.
After recent health issues this car will be back out on the track this year and ill be going for it. yolo.
