More boost for a N54 Atacama Yellow 35is

Post by B21 » Sat Nov 13, 2021 10:41 pm

Well it’s been a few days since I bought any bits for the latest Yellow Peril.

It’s dangerous to wander into the forums and then ideas start to happen.

I’ve ended up buying a pair of TTE500s for the 35is.

https://tteglobal.com/bmw/1-series/e82e ... bochargers

The N54’s boost is implemented with the help of two Mitsubishi TD03-10TK3 turbo chargers which operate in parallel. Every turbocharger is in charge of its 3 cylinders from the block. The N54 engine has a boost pressure of 0.55 bar/8 PSI.

You can raise the boost pressure up to about 16 to 19 psi relatively easily which is what I’ve done using the stock MHD flash off the shelf maps.

The onboard boost sensor itself limits max boost to around 20 psi but by then the turbos are running out of puff and you are badly into the laws of diminishing returns.

The TTE500 is a German production of what’s called a hybrid turbo. That is it’s a stock OE turbo which then is used as a carcass to be used with better designed / engineered impellers and exhaust turbines plus other parts.

The advantages are that it allows a relatively bolt on capability with little physical hardware changes.

This is relevant especially for RHD cars as the steering linkages go through the same area as the turbos and their plumbing.

Through a combo of better aerodynamics, better engineering the same physical carcass can be made be made to flow more air AND generate more boost.

I had already gone down this route with my E89 20i, this time using a MHI produced uprated version of the OE unit.

The N54 is well documented as one very tough, very scalable engine…people have taken it well beyond 1,000 crank BHP…

I chose the TTE500 as although it’s designed to do a mere 500 wheel not crank BHP it’s torque curve starts with and climbs alongside the stock torque curve and then just keeps climbing.

The bigger twin turbos do generate more power BUT the torque comes in later.

For street use I prioritised street oriented torque over max possible BHP.

In addition with the exception of an uprated boost sensor and some better inlet plumbing the rest of the hardware can remain stockish..

Part of criteria is to be able run a decent filtration system which precludes the DCI (dual cone intakes)..so at this stage it will be into see how rest that really is.

It appears that a lot of plumbing issues on other N54 installations were not replicated on the E89.

Boost is implemented with the help of two Mitsubishi TD03-10TK3 turbo chargers which operate in parallel. Every turbocharger is in charge of its 3 cylinders from the block. The N54 engine has a boost pressure of 0.55 bar/8 PSI.

Maybe they should call you Boost Bondar.

What power output do you think you will achieve?

What about the mid range? Will that suffer?

Now that you are an expert what is your view on the big turbo kit you fitted to your 20i?

Hi Ed, I'm aimimg for at least a headline crank figure of 500bhp..sounds like a convincing nice round number!

I'll get some 2" plumbing (intakes and charge pipe). Will be interesting at that level to see if the stock airbox strangles the output too much.

I'll do some dyno runs with the airbox lid off and filter out just to see how it affects it.

Reference the N20 engine and big turbo..from a simple economics and incremental power gains its not worth it compared to how much you get with just a re-map.

Having said that, if you want to be able to stay easily with a stock 35i and even a 35is then its good value if you then don't have to buy a 35i/35is.. :poke: :driving:  :fuelfire:

Er not quite 🙈

In my case I went for a pair of new turbos rather than using my turbos as cores…plus I paid for the upgraded waste gate control bushings etc..

So that takes it well over £2k…kerching

Still, with new turbos, new shocks, new injectors that only leaves the HPFP bogie man that’ are the unique issues to the 35i/35is

Well thats made me feel better lol. Yes I've heard about the HPFP giving issues too but I've heard that they affect the car making them hard to start and normal running problems too

They usually generate quite a few fault codes too..

Seems that 2009-2011 were the worst years for Z4 35i cars..

The pump was iterated at least 8 times using various manufacturers.

Will be interested to see how useable that set up is on the road as opposed to a track or strip.

I gather going to a single turbo is going to be very laggy but maybe much more power?

What do you plan to do with the old turbos once they’ve been swapped out?

We will have to wait and see how the new turbos affect drivability…when I get the MHD tune done I’ll ask to prioritise lower end torque over maximum possible BHP..

The current turbos are in, AFAIK, perfect working condition., judging by the test dyno run as stock.

Plus they responded as well as was predicted to the first stage tune.

So I’ll probably eBay them as good working examples.

They would of course make good exchange cores as well.

Boost Baby Boost..

The TTE500 turbos have arrived for a new year fitting..just need to get the rest of the intake plumbing upgraded to 2".

Need to get my MHD tuning upgraded, find a tuner.

Plus get a T-MAP sensor that can cope with the boost pressures..

All 1st world problems..

Probably VSRF…maybe VTT…I think N54.com does reasonably shipping with VSRF so probably go with those boys..

If you mean n54tuning.com then i'd avoid them. I had real hassle returning some downpipes that didnt fit, tge customer service was non existant.

X-ph.com was a much better US seller to deal with, i'd check their black friday sale out first.
