Boxed Subwoofer or not?

Post by embracetheataris » Wed Apr 29, 2009 3:18 pm

Hi All,

I just wondered if anyone had any advice on whether or not a boxed subwoofer would perform as well as the 2 separate subwoofers that are included in the Premium Audio/Carver Sound Systems mounted behind the seats?

Would the sound quality suffer from the sub being totally enclosed in the boot or would it actually benefit it? I'm just trying to decide what the best method would be in terms of upgrading to a sub/s?

Any Help or advice would be appreciated!?

Cheers :D

The bulkhead in the zed is much much thicker than any usual hatchback / saloon where you can virtually stab your way back there, so I would be fairly sure it would be fairly much quieter than a usual car, meaning you'd have to go bigger / louder to compensate.

Do what I'm planning, (if it ever actually happens) put your own spec behind the seats with a different amp

The Z4 has a parcel shelf which allows plenty of access to the boot. Bass travels quite well with the roof up and even with it down, its never going to be as goood as a hardtop though, this is my setup so far, i'll be going for a custom box with a single JL 12" at some point....

I wonder if the JL 6W3v3 would fit in the stock posiiton behind the seats, 2 of these would sound greta.

Bit too much of a sacrifice for me. Wish I had the carver but will live without!

those focals i mentioned earlier are designed to run in tiny sealed enclosures which would be perfect for behind the seats, i take it no one has tried any.
If i remember correctly the JL's need to be run in a vented enclosure and i doubt you will get the volume box or space for the port in the space behind the seats.

I've got no idea what size fits behind the seats, but I used one of these in a previous car:

Works from a very small enclosure, so a good option for retaining some bootspace

FPI - This from the JL's info page - it does state that they can be run in small enclosed spaces and they are only 4.25" deep.... :)

W3v3 Subwoofer Drivers

"Clearly the best sounding W3's yet, these subwoofers feature DMA-optimized, long linear excursion capability to minimize distortion and increase output. W3v3's are available in single 2 ohm, 4 ohm and 8 ohm versions (6W3v3 available in 4 ohm and 8 ohm only) and are superb performers at medium power levels in compact sealed or ported enclosures."

so you have got 8" dimension subs in the stock positions behind the seats?? Did they fit ok?? I was under the impression the 8" subs would be too big for the area!
