Nickbmw08 wrote: Fri Apr 30, 2021 1:17 pm BMW high wycombe have suggested it requires a inspection 1? Is that correct on would a simple oil service be sufficient?

Happy to put it through whichever it needs but seems stupid paying a lot for the Insp 1 when it doesn’t need it!
Thanks
It's only done 10K miles since it had an Inspection 2, so it seems a bit soon to have an Inspection 1.

Personally I'd just have an oil service, new brake fluid and a cabin filter but that's just my opinion - not based on any technical expertise!

I'd be using an Indy too, but if your car has full BMWSH I can see why you might want to keep that intact.
Coupes because stunning!

My Z4MR is asking for an oil service in the next few hundred miles. As I will be selling it very soon, I thought it would be worth asking my local BMW dealership for a price for the oil service. The girl on the phone was adamant that they could only offer me an Inspection 1 or Inspection 2, telling me quite authoritatively that the oil service was part of the inspection servicing. £649 for an Inspection 1, which she said I would have to have if I wanted an oil change. Eventually I extracted a price from her for an oil service, which would be £202. I haven't used a dealership for years, and now I remember why

You can get it cheaper if you go through the BMW website...but last time I tried that (admittedly about 8 years ago and under BMW Insured Warranty) they told me they'd given me the non-M price in error.

I did try looking it up on bmw-service.co.uk before and after my call, but the website is down. My nearest reputable BMW specialist charges about £170 for an oil service, so I'd travel to my (easier to get to) local BMW dealership if they'd do it for £161 as per your screenshot. It's highly tempting to do it myself, as I normally do with my cars, though I know it wouldn't give the new owner quite the same peace of mind.

mmm-five Thanks, I did try that after writing my reply. It showed me the £160-odd price for Value Service, but then said it couldn't book me in, instructing me to phone up the dealership :? Hopefully someone else will pick up the phone this time

Don’t forget the robbing bastards add their standard scope to everything, so you £160 oil se4vice now costs £240 odd quid. Brake fluid is £82 so £366 in total for oil and brake fluid service.

Which would (or should ) be £166 at any decent indy .

2 reason why anyone would use a main dealer  either the car is under warranty or sheer vanity of a dealer stamp  there is no free courtesy car anymore & coffee is better at Greggs . the spanner guys don't give a toss about your car , i just don't see the appeal of going to BMW unless you really have to .

Exactly why mines going to my bmw Indy in a week, should see at least £100 less than bmw want for oil and brake fluid se4vice.

That has been my experience too.

I took my first E86 for an oil & filter, micro-filter and brake fluid service at Sytner in May 2016 and it cost £260.32. Only because I was selling it and it had full BMWSH up to then, so the buyer wanted it to stay that way which was fair enough.

Took my next E86 to an ex-Sytner Indy and the same service cost £161.00 in June 2019.

mr wilks My consideration of using BMW was more down to the potential vanity of a prospective buyer, rather than my own. An oil change is an oil change, as far as I'm concerned. There is no magic, but I know some people place quite a bit of value and confidence in a BMW service stamp. My car isn't a FBMWSH car, so, based on their displays of incompetence over three phone calls today, I won't be bothering with BMW for my oil service :)

To be fair James once a car has been out of the BMW history loop I'm not sure going back to them adds much anyway.

I only took my first Z4 to Sytner because it had only ever been to main dealers and the buyer wanted to maintain that, which was part of the deal we agreed. My next 2 had already been elsewhere when I got them so they have gone to Indies, who are both ex-Sytner anyway!

Iain.

Mr Tidy That sounds like a wholly sensible approach  The indie I want to use is exceptional (their YouTube videos are a testament to that), but they are an hour away and have no courtesy cars. BMW are 10 miles away and I assumed they would have courtesy cars, but they clearly aren't worth driving to :) So now it's a toss-up between £80 and changing the oil and filter myself, or paying £180 for an independent to do it. Despite my own feelings, I think the independent is the wise choice.

So sound much like myself, more than competent and willing to do all servicing yourself, but know that if/when you come to self that self service will affect selling. There will be a point in time though that I would like to think I can service myself without affecting its value. The old boys with their TR6’s for example I would expect are self serviced for example.
