E89 wheels - fitment advice

Post by mehighfuss » Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:27 pm

Hi all,

The time has come to finally replace the 19' 296 wheels(already repaired a couple of times) I currently have on my E89.

Having researched the forum a bit I am inclined to go towards the CMWheels/BMAutosport option rather than OEM wheels(I have only seen a set of 19' 276 I quite fancy but concerned about reliability).

So far I like these:

1) https://cmwheels.com/product/19%e2%80%b ... dark-tint/

2) https://cmwheels.com/product/19%e2%80%b ... ned-5x120/

3) https://www.bmautosport.co.uk/showroom/ ... 94_198_294

4) https://www.bmautosport.co.uk/showroom/ ... 94_198_294

Ideally I would prefer not using spacers. Is any of the above OK without spacers?

If spacers are mandatory can anyone recommend a good size/set?

In terms of tires I suppose 235/35/19 Front and 255/35/19 Rear would be a good fit?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

type in all the exact specs on willtheyfit.com and you'll see how the wheels compare. most are pretty close, id say 789M styles will go straight on, all the others would ideally run a small spacer on the front most likely.

for reference in case you didn't know, style 296s are 8x19 ET29 front, and 9x19 ET40 rear.

If you search hard enough you’ll be able to pick up a genuine set of 437M’s for a couple of hundred quid more than those reps. Or a shabby set for less, which you could have refurbished for not a lot of money if you know where to go.

The originals are forged, so light and very strong

I had a look on eBay and found a couple of 437M sets with 255/35/19 Front and 275/35/19 Rear. Would I be correct to assume these wheels and tyres will be a straight fit my Z4(without spacers) but the front wheels will rub on full lock due to tyre size being 255 instead of a more appropriate 245/235?

What I don't really understand is that according with willitfit there is a big difference between my current setup and the 437M wheels:

'Compared to your existing wheel, this new wheel will have an inner rim which is 12.7mm closer to the suspension strut. The outer rim will poke out 12.7mm more than before.'

but in the same time I see a couple of threads in here that suggest these wheels will be a direct fit without spacers/issues.

So the Z4 can accommodate an extra 12.7mm in and out without any issues?

Been out for a decent drive this afternoon, and I think the standard M3’ Sized tires are a little too much for the Z.

I couldn’t feel any rubbing, even on full lock, but 255’s front and 275’s rear is a bit OTT I think. Maybe works for the 35i / 35is with close to 400bhp, but not sure about the 4 pot turbo with under 300Bhp.

I’m delighted with how the wheels sit on the car, but think I might end up downsizing the tires in due course.

If I were you, I’d try and find a set in good condition but with tires that need replacing so you can specify a more sensible size.... just a thought
