Noise

Car been stood at work a few days due snow. Driving home this evening i can hear a noise in my right lug hole.
Never noticed it before, sounds like road noise coming from the the rear right speaker grille.
I even double checked the windows were closed.
Was almost going to stop and have a look outside, half expecting a flat tyre.

The only difference is i temporarily removed my anti scuff pads on the seat belt (resprayed them black as they have faded) and have yet to refit.
Having removed the grilles a couple of weeks ago there isn't much in the way of open space with the speakers in there.
Only other gap is where the seat belt retracts.

Bit of mystery, of course day before i take it in for mot.

Well come to the conclusion it's my half worn asy. 3 tyres creating road noise.
I'm possibly suspecting that the rubber gets harder when worn down, for better wear, reason why they seem to be lasting so long.
Strange because when they were first fitted, i initially disliked them. Felt different to the previous asy. 2's.
There was something you couldn't quite put your finger on.

Still noisy i suspect they have made the core of the blocks harder. Some video reviews said they seemed stiffer than the 2's when reviewed. Probably what i could feel when first fitted, felt a bit like rft's. I suspect now the softer surface has been worn off the harder core is making the noise. The Zed seems to like a softer tyre especially on the uneven country roads i spend half my time. It can be a wobbly car. It's not a car you drive on "autopliot".

Looking at video reviews of later asy.5 they are going even stiffer on the blocks. I can still get asy2, might invest in them, if i can justify £200.
They seemed the perfect tyre for the Zed.

Until just before Christmas i had the windows open or roof down.
Now i hear road rumble from the boot.

I get a noise like this that I can muffle by tucking a microfiber cloth along the bottom of the drivers side quarter window. I always assumed some bit of foam sound proofing had perished as the car is 11 years old now and the road noise is getting in somewhere.

Yes i have been stuffing rags into all sorts of gaps around where the roof frame lifts the flap from the boot.
It's almost like the noise comes through the speaker grill, i had thought of stuffing behind that speaker some fibre wall insulation as after all that is the wheel arch area. Or just get some new tyres!

Well if you find a solution let me know, I have lost about 4 good cloths so far by forgetting they are there and then opening the window!!!

Something else i notice when comparing asy2 and asy3, the 3 has wider channels so less rubber in contact with the road.

More than likely, but i think they made the tyre harder to improve the wear of what rubber is left (when first saw the tyre it looked like only 50% of it's width was rubber in contact) and to stiffen the blocks on breaking. Water channels are nearly 5/8 wide compared to 3/8 on asy2.
Some driven reviews said they felt harder, to "improve" steering.
If not careful drifting back to rft hardness, which i see can now can be purchased as GY asy. tyre.
When i first bought asy2 i dug my nail into the tread, was much softer than the rft tyres.
Asy5 seem to be even harder by reviews.

With the tyres now rated, i wonder if it’s a drive for a better economy band? Are they rated better than the predecessors?

Dunlop SportMaxx RT2 worth considering as clearly noise is a issue

Just to nail the tyres down more, my 35i is an 09 car with 115k miles on and is as quiet as any of the other much newer E89’s I’ve had regarding sound proofing etc.
