Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe

Post by wspohn » Sat Aug 01, 2020 10:59 pm

Those in the UK may well have not heard of this model - they only made 1280 before GM pulled the plug on Pontiac, of which less than 300 were the GXP (2.0 turbo engine) with manual transmission.

They combined a very capable chassis with a direct injection 4 cylinder engine. It is dead easy to get the power output to around 200 bhp/liter (I'm running a conservative 375 bhp/375 Tq) with excellent mileage. My car will get into the 12 second range in the 1/4 mile while still getting 30 mpg when not under boost. It makes an interesting contrast to my Z4M coupe.

It is now significantly quicker than the Z4M, and lighter, but it will never sound half as good as the S54 motor (especially with the RPI rear boxes I have on the Z4).

Sometimes its more about the emotion of how they sound and feel than it is about the quarter mile

Someone in my work had one of these. Always wondered what it was, as I only ever saw it driving past me and never saw the badge.

Interesting looking car. Something different from the usual stuff

I really like it, and that's some impressive performance.

I imagine it's a bit cheaper to run than an MC as well, but I'd still rather have an MC!
Coupes because stunning!

The Solstice can attain 30 mpg when cruising. We needn't talk about what the mileage figures for the MC are! The only things I've owned that sucked more gas were either V8 powered with large carbs, or my old Lambo with six Webers (which was the best sounding car I think I have ever owned!) And I opted to owned both the MC and Solstice as they both attracted me for different reasons. I love high revving naturally aspired engines (I raced an MGA Twin Cam for years) but also enjoy the almost instant torque of a turboed engine.
