Is it worth changing these as a precaution? Nothing wrong with my roof at present, cars 5 years old, any thoughts?

it looks that these relays start to fail after 7-10 years, depending on usage of course this varies

I changed them when the car was 9 years old, had no issues before that and they looked OK

For the £30 it costs, I'd just do it, replace every 5 years and it's cheap peace of mind.

My car is 10 years old and hadn’t had any roof problems but I changed my relays just as a precaution after reading earlier posts. As others have said for £30 or so it is not worth taking the risk of not doing so.

I changed the 10 yr old relays on my perfectly working top and was appalled at how pitted they were.

Where do most people get their famed salmon relays from, do they all come from the main stealers or are there other reputable sources to acquire them?

You can get them in many places the part no 12631742690 is available from dozens of sources..it’s a generic reply made by Tyco used in dozens of bmw applications...around £15 ish is the market price for one relay..make sure the date code is within the last couple of years to avoid old stock..

Thanks to all.
Stumbled upon this thread so I picked up a pair of relays.
Just changed them and it looks like they have never been replaced from new with a date code of 0949!
Possibly dodged a bullet but would never have known about it without this forum.
So I've got an original pair of salmon relays that could have been destined for an M if anyone wants to buy them, only £50 each :D :) :poke:

Went to my “local” dealer in Colchester today for some salmon relays, I promised myself it would be the first thing I did to the new car. Probably just as well, as in line with Owdgits post above the ones I removed were numbered 0926, so I guess the previous owner dodged a bullet !!

Do I need to disconnect the battery prior to replacing the relays?
