Tip...knee pad removal

Post by CrazyOneToo » Sat Sep 21, 2019 9:47 pm

When removing these knee pads there are two recessed areas on the bottom to pry. See top photo with highlighted area.
The pry tool/screwdriver/knife should be held at an angle to go up into the recessed area of the console.
Not held flat against the console. Somewhere approximately at a 45 degree angle to the console plastic.
There is maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch area of the knee pad that is sunk in and isn't visible when attached in place.
Meaning the knee pad is thicker than you can see.

These photos show the Left hand knee pad and the Right hand side of the console.

Yes, I can take a photo for you also but this might help out more.

I rarely find anything that ECSTuning doesn't have.

The site linked below shows to have them also. And if you look at RealOEM.com you can find almost any part number.

If yours is the same car as mine the link below shows the fasteners part number as 51472263062.

RealOEM is a great site for reference. On the main page just enter in the last 7 of your VIN to show your car info.

There are a lot of sites out there that sell BMW parts. If the sites below don't help I can list some others.

again, many thanks. could i please have a pic of yours so i can work out if it is handed, left or right, or same part number should fit both sides. the parts list says no such accessory is available for my RHD car, but then i found a net # 51477116156 that supposedly fits my VIN with a 'warning vest"...go figure???

I didn't take it apart but I assume the mounts (4) just need a hole made to screw into the carpet.

great, thanks. that is different to every other BMW one can find. the angled front bar seems unique to the Z. I have found various sources for the clip.

Thanks for this great post. I removed my one today, but not before a lot of cursing. I used a butter knife (mentioned in another forum post) and it worked the best. You need something quite flat and strong. Anyway, there are 4 recesses to get into, but the two lower ones are the best. I got under the cover with the butter knife and prised it away from the console, then used a plastic trim removal tool to get under and remove the panel. What a pain...
I intend to put a little bit of silicone grease on the clips before clipping it back. hopefully, this will make it easier next time!
I hope the picture (in addition to CrazyOneToos post) helps to explain further:
