From what I have researched, Bilstein B8 shocks with eichbach springs seems to be a good fit for the Z4, depending on what your budget allows. Lowers the car around 25 - 30mm but has a very big impact on the handling in a positive way.
I fitted the Eibach springs on my 35i ten days ago and replaced the rubber spring seats. I prefer to replace/upgrade my suspension in stages till it 'feels right' for my driving style/comfort as opposed to going all in and not liking the result.
My local indy fitted the springs for £180 inc VAT and the car is transformed in cornering and also surprisingly ride comfort as well!
On unpacking the springs the first thing I noted was the wire used by Eibach is around 20% thicker than the standard spring!
As for lowering the car, mine hardly dropped at all on the rear and around 5mm on the front, possibly due to the fact that I replaced the badly indented rubber spring seats.
To sum up handling, i had a bike up my butt on the road coming out of Cornwall up to Saltash yesterday, the single lane goes to dual on uphill sections so I floored my car (stage 1 map at 385BHP and 415lb/ft) with all 'safety systems' off. On the uphill curve he could not gain ground on me and he was laid right over peg scraping! So, yes I am happy. I will go for Eibach anti roll bars next before shocks...
