Which 4x4 pick up...?

Post by john-e89 » Tue Feb 11, 2020 6:27 pm

Bonjourno,

As per title, before I pull the trigger on a Ford Ranger Widtrack does anyone have any thoughts of anything better..? Pick ups are not an area I’m familiar with but the new Wildtrack seems to fit the bill. New 10sp auto box replacing the apparently dismal 6sp auto, it can tow up to 3.5tons, comes with a very good spec including adaptive cruise if you want, however it still uses cart springs.... although apparently it’s damped a lot better now so not as bouncy unladen. The Raptor has coils all round but isn’t much use for towing which is essential. Not keen on the Merc as it’s just a fancy Nissan so apart from the obvious Hi-lux which I don’t think is as well specced, I’m probably set on a Ranger.

Thoughts perhaps from more experienced pick up users...?

The Amorok is the better engine and possibly a bit less fussy with 8 speed rather than 10 but it lags way behind in tech, it’s as bargain basement as you’ll find with no option to spec the latest up to date toys like lane departure, adaptive braking, adaptive cruise, etc, etc...As I’ll be doing some distance work with a trailer these things matter, so the Ranger nicks it for these reasons, plus it’ll pull 3.5tons so not short of grunt even though it’s dropped to 2 litres with dual turbos and 500NM.

It’s a bit mad tbh Mark, the tyres will wear out in 70 miles, it’s not too good for towing....if I didn’t need a motorway Lugger as well as a workhorse I’d probably go for it for a giggle.......as long as I could just drive it at night out of sight....

You may already know but be careful of your speed in one of these things. The big twin cab pickups are getting that heavy now that they fall into a different speed bracket. Your still OK at 70 on a motorway but the limit is 60 on a duel carriageway and 50 on single carriageways the same as vans.

It’s why I went for the Nissan John, they’re quite bland. I found the wildtrak a little too bling and a bit pikey

You may want to publicise that further!
Most of the beggars seem to regard those figures as minimums!
