Bad week for my Zed

Post by Z4monster » Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:07 pm

While cruising up the motorway on Tuesday night, a lorry threw a stone at me. I heard the smack but couldn't see any damage in the dark. However on checking the car Wednesday, I've now got a lovely crack spreading from the A-Pillar across the passenger side of the 'screen. Fabulous!! The damn thing isn't six months old yet and already needs a new screen.

Then yesterday, I got in the car an reversed back only to find the drivers mirror hasn't moved from the park position. Passenger side is fine. I try using the button to fold them both back in and out but the RHS just flickers slightly and stays resolutely upright!
I've manually moved it into position but then the mirror is not angled correctly for some reason. Again this can be moved manually but somehow moved itself back again a few minutes later whilst driving.

Now the damn thing is completely dead but at least it stays put.

So a trip to BMW dealer is required but they can't give me a courtesy car for two weeks and I don't live near enough to manage without one for the day.

I just hope nothing else goes wrong. :headbang:

I had a cracked windscreen 2 months into ownership.

Autoglass were called in by my insurer, they didn’t have a clue about recalibrating the camera in the rear view mirror which is part of the lane departure warning system. After several hours of messing about with it they gave up and BMW were called in to sort it.

Just a word of warning!

Also, if you have head up display, make sure that the new windscreen glass is compatible.

The Driver door mirror issue (wiring) is a common one. Will need a new mirror.

I managed to crack the screen on my at the time brand new F20 1 Series whilst washing the car! Called my insurance who referred me to Carglass (the same lot as Autoglass) and they fitted a genuine OE BMW windscreen (well I insisted that they use an OE genuine part since the car was just a few months old at the time) and they calibrated the camera without any issues.

I've already requested that I need an OEM screen and they have said that they will let me know when it arrives and then fit it. I had a previous Z4 replaced and the pattern screen didn't work with auto wipers so had to be replaced with a BMW screen. I was already prepared this time so knew to ask up front.

Hopefully the camera will not be an issue but that's up to them to sort out.

Hopefully the mirror will be a quick fix and can be sorted in one visit. Hate wasting time going back after the disgnostic visit for a fix.

FWIW I got an OEM screen, Autoglass said there were no alternatives at the time.

So the OEM screen is being fitted on Friday so hopefully that's going to be a one visit thing.

Unfortunately the passenger mirror has now joined the drivers side and gone on strike. I wonder if the control module has gone screwy? Let's see what BMW do with it.

So windscreen got replaced today by Autoglass. Only snag was the weather meant I had to take it to the workshop instead of it being done at home. All replaced, calibrated and everything works well.

Then on my way home the bloody parking sensors alerted and packed up! Nothing to do with the screen AFAIK but probably related to the mirror control issues I've had. The mirrors flap around like Pluto's ears at times and fold when they want and not when I want. Today the driver side one was folded in again despite not having worked for a week. Also the mirror pitch went all screwy again, which proves it still has life in there somewhere.

Roll on next Friday when BMW get to look at it and see what has screwed up!

Don't worry about your windscreen - Auto-windscreens did mine in the 335 - It wasn't very old !
The depot manager said it had to be a BMW screen as the camera system had to be re calibrated by a BMW dealership and that unless a BMW screen had been fitted, they wouldn't touch it.

When the screen fitter did the job on my drive, i watched him (I asked him if he wouldn't mind) and was impressed at his skill and dexterity.
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Well, car went in Friday. They inspected it and found the mirror unit faulty. Replacement got fitted today and they also reprogrammed the parking sensors and valeted the car.

I went to pick it up after work and now the damn thing won't unlock!! No idea what this problem is now but glad it happened with them and they can look at it. It has done this once before recently but it unlocked after 30 seconds or so.

So I got back in the loan car and came home again.

What an anti-climax!

Car all back now and supposedly fixed. Let's see what happens over next few weeks!

Apparently they found an issue when they took the door card off again. I guess someone forgot to connect a plug correctly when they worked on the mirror. Hopefully no more visits to the dealer for faults.

Oh dear. It's not the mirror virus spreading, is it?

Apparently the mirror module on early cars has an issue which has now been fixed with a new unit. Also affects the 3 series which was launched the same weekend.

They'll replace the mirror unit and hopefully it shouldn't happen again. Tempting fate but mine has been working since they replaced it.
