Z4 E89 Rear hardtop part not operating correctly

Post by Blck_Z » Mon Dec 02, 2019 11:51 am

Hello,

I looked on the forum and I can't seem to find someone here with a similar issue as the one I have. I have managed to find two forum users on a different forum having the same issue but they said they'll go to the dealership and haven't updated the thread after fixing it.

So what happened was that I was driving with the top down a few weeks ago, it was quite warm 12-14C and I was driving through London. The top went down fine and then when I tried to put it back down, the last part of the roof -the one with the window- got stuck halfway through. I was in a parking lot, I tried to press it down but I couldn't. Eventually I turned off the engine and I was able to manually bring it down and pressing the roof close button locked it.

I tried using it again last week and the rear part with the window would only go up 10-15cm and stop there while getting roof movement impaired message. I looked for codes with Delphi and Inpa, couldn't find anything. Relays were replaced a few months ago, tried the old ones in but still no joy.

Anyone has any suggestions?

If the rear window started it’s movement but stopped early that doesn’t sound like a sensor, it could be a split hose/low fluid etc
Check for leaks.

Thinking about it, when the roof starts to open it's removing it's weight off the rear boot. Perhaps something under there not quite right and the system freezes. Try pushing down on the boot as you operate the roof.
Something here might be moving as the weight comes off:

Wouldn’t that occurring flag up a sensor code though? Unplugged/open circuit would be logged wouldn’t it?

Well when i had my roof problem, the reader said there was several faulty sensors, when there were non.
I wouldn't trust the readouts or lack of to much.
Unless of course the common problem was the module that these are connected to.

Would the hydraulic fluid smell? I was looking for a leak but couldn't find any obvious ones. I was thinking of checking the cables that bend a lot between the two parts of the roof and I'll also check the cables flybobbie suggested.

if you have a leak it'll empty the whole lot pretty quick and the roof will stop working all together which will be a dead giveaway
