My Second Zed Thread (2010 E89 sDrive30i)

Post by Timmyboybunter » Mon Nov 04, 2019 1:45 am

So my 2nd Zed makes an unplanned entry to the household.

Wasn't planning this route at all, but a quick drive in a friend's E89 23i back in the summer showed me how nice they are - then a slightly unloved 3.0 popped up for sale 15 minutes down the road at a decent price, so home it came.

I've enjoyed keeping a record of everything that's happened with my E85 (though probably a boring read for anyone except me!) so thought I'd do the same for the newbie.

My car:

2010 sDrive30i sapphire black automatic
295 style 18" wheels
Ivory white heated nappa leather + pure white design option
100k when purchased, October 2019
Options when new: heated sports seats, iDrive, front/rear PDC, 11 speaker audio, folding mirrors, wind deflector, USB port.

Maintenance in my ownership:

Replaced arm rest USB port
Updated navigation maps (v2020-1)
Replaced salmon red roof relays
Replaced ambient temperature sensor
Replaced original battery
Replaced wiper blades
Made good loose connection in boot soft close wiring
Fitted Dunlop Sport Maxx RT 2 all round (non run flat)
All body/roof seals treated with Gummi Bears 😁
All roof moving parts lubricated with lithium grease
Replaced flaking/scratched center console buttons (roof, PDC, heated seats)
Replaced rear BMW roundel
Reconditioned seat leather / restored damage
Replaced near side rear light cluster
MOT passed!
Service (April 2021) - Oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter.
Transmission service (May 2021) - Filter, fluid, pan etc.
Differential fluid changed (May 2021)
Spark plugs changed (May 2021)
Cooland changed (May 2021)
Brake fluid changed (May 2021)

Mods to date:

Stubby aerial
Cruise control
C-tek charging harness
Tune2air USB bluetooth audio receiver
OE cupholders/phone cradle replaced with OE full oddments tray
Smart Top
M-sport E9X steering wheel with LCI paddles
M-sport Front Bumper
M-sport sill covers
Remus exhaust
Philips DiamondVision 5000k angel eye (H8) bulbs

And the first fix completed too. The USB port in the arm rest wasn't working (the aux port was working fine). On closer examination the little plastic 'guide' bit inside the socket had been snapped off at some point and the 4 metal pins were all bent beyond repair.

I bought part number 9129651 off Ebay - which is different to the part number on the one I removed, 9138402. They are very similar however, just some different coloured plastic and the 'Aux In' text is reversed. Now able to stream music from a USB drive, so all working fine.

Original part: (now looking a bit shabby - rather than take everything apart I just pulled it out with long nose pliers seeing as it was broken anyway)

The car will look great with a little TLC and once you've changed the grills and powder coated the wheels :)

Thanks :D

Yes they're the obvious 2 places to start aren't they.

Unfortunately the 2 front tyres need replacing, and the rears have some budgets on currently - so I'm looking at a large bill to get the 294's on the car and looking decent. I love the design though, so they'll be going in the loft until funds permit.

I'm picking up a set of 290 wheels from another forum member this week, with almost new Bridgestones all round - not the best wheel design and 17" rather than 18" but will do the job and remove the red.

Another forum member has generously agreed to send me his standard grilles for a charitable donation, so that will sort that bit of red out too - I'll give him a proper shout out in due course.

I'm very familiar with E85s, but know very little about the E89s - are there any other obvious quick winsI should have on my mod short list? (I prefer the pre facelift side markers, so won't be upgrading those)

That will come good with some time & effort , it was spotted & discussed on the forum recently , cheap car that won't look it once back to a more stock look
10yrs old now but imo not showing their age at all , still a great looking car & the black disguises the non Msport bumpers too
Happy days

I spotted this car on Autotrader a few weeks back, the price was good but I would imagine the wheels and grills must have put many off it. Will look great when back to stock. Regarding the PDC sensor you could try spraying WD40 on it, I had this issue with a PDC sensor on mine a couple of weeks back and after spraying it with WD40 it seems to be fine since.

Thanks for the tip - I've read they can be problematic, especially after getting wet. I'm sure when I first picked it up just one of them was playing up, whereas after washing the car yesterday they were all going haywire :) I'll give them a decent dry, listen out for the tell-tale clicking and give the WD40 idea a go.

Ha, the boat belongs to my next door neighbour and I've just agreed the sale of my Triumph Sprint motorbike - a casualty of the E89 arriving. White Skoda is my family wagon, blue Honda is Mrs Timmyboybunter's car. I do consider us very lucky however to be able to have a 'toy' car too - though until the E85 is sold I am officially unpopular in the house.
scootr wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2019 9:01 am Congrats on the new car. She's a beauty
Cheers - yours looks in very shiny condition. Truth be told black would be the last colour I'd choose - looks great for 5 minutes, but just gets ruined as soon as you use it especially in winter. The sterling grey on my E85 hides the dirt very, very well.

Thanks - I saw it mentioned in the 'E89 market watch' thread but couldn't find any other discussion about it. Curious to read if you do have another thread link to hand. I've already found myself looking at black M-Sport bumpers on Ebay. Must. Resist.

I've thought about the M sport bumpers for my car too but in the end I've come to the conclusion this is one BMW that actually looks better in standard trim especially in black and does not loose a lot by not having it. The 7 series is another that is better in standard rather than M Sport all the rest 1 2 3 4 5 series etc have to be M Sport.

Sat nav maps updated - easy and painless to do, took about 45 mins. I was lazy and bought one of those 'lifetime' FSC codes from Ebay for £7 - worked perfectly.

A bit of a bargain then, what's not to like. : :D

Well apart from the lipstick.

Once you get those wheels and grill sorted you'll have yourself a corker.
