The negatives to a Z4

Post by dhobbs » Wed Sep 11, 2019 12:47 pm

I use my e85 as a daily. Admittedly I have a family car for family sh*t but that is boring to drive.

Sometimes the Z4 does get tiring but on the whole for me is a better place to be. And when the sun shines, the roof comes down and it’s a different car!
3.0si roadster. Requisite stubby. Sound gen mod. LED numberplate lights. LED boot strip. Interior lights LED too. ZHP gearknob. Daily drive :driving:
Motor in boot. Bilstein B8 dampers. New radio, much better sounds

I drive mine as often as I can and the roof is down if it's dry and not too cold. Always arrive with a smile :D

What are you buying the car for. Daily driver, weekend toy?

Perhaps the OP isn’t seriously considering buying a Z4 as it appears they can’t be bothered to reply

I'm totally with you on the steering - my E90 330i with Hydraulic PAS is just so much better!

Maybe after 5 years I've got used to the run-flats and dodging pot-holes and drains - possibly also because my E90 is still on run-flats.

But my Z4 still feels special every time I drive it - and I'm still looking back at it every time I park it. :D
I recently bought an E46 330Ci as a daily for work. 18 inch alloys but non run flat tyres. The ride is a revelation, better than both the E91 and (by miles!) the Z4.

Can't think of many downsides really, unless you need more than 2 seats! I've used both my E86 and E89 as dailies with no problems, super comfy and with good enough handling for some fun. Sure they're not as comfy as a 3 series or equivalent, but who cares? Boots bigger than people give credit for aswell, had no issue fitting a weeks worth of gear and camping equipment for 2 people in it - with the roof down! Also chucked a 1.9m parasol in once, nifty ski hatch  .

BUT...

What are the negatives to the car? What are some of the quirks that annoy you? Are oil changes insanely expensive? Basically, after the honeymoon is over (after you bought your Z4) what are the annoyances you've noticed?

If all the annoyances/quirks listed are not sudden instant deal breakers for me, I'd love to hop onto the bandwagon!

Thanks for your help!
Hope you haven’t been ‘sleepless’ and too tired to reply?.....or is the internet broken in Seattle Brian?

Good choice!
One thing I would recommend with the bones is to put a tie-wrap around each of the securing loops as they can slip off the spars with even just a light bike frame mounted.
Bit of a design flaw imo as they’re friction-fit but the tiewraps secure them nicely.

I use my Z4 as a daily and I love that I can listen to that fabulous N52 engine most days!!

Though some people think it is odd that my Z4 is my daily given that I also have a E46 330i Individual. The E46 is my Friday / weekend car :D

My Z4 is my special day/weekend car. But I get to hear an N52 every time I go out as my daily E90 330i also has an N52 - but it's far too quiet for my liking. :(

I thought my E90 330i was far too quiet as well. :(

From what I read though both the 130i/Z4 with the N52 engine are much more vocal. I'm a firm believer that if a car has reasonable cylinders and capacity then you should be able to hear it for sure. 8)

Ahh is that the bits that go around the frame you mean? I'll get something extra to tie down with. Thanks for the tip!

Is it easy to put on and off car? I've not tried yet!

My Z4 with the N52 is way more vocal than my 330i, especially as my current Z4 has a custom cat-back exhaust!

I don't know about the 130i (yet), but that's the only car I'd want to replace my 330i.
