Looks fine to me (front end bolts are questionable). I’d ask for the unsightly ones you can see to be tidied up- about as much as you can realistically ask.

Sadly it does stink, but Mr Joe Average , buying a car wouldnt know a locking wheel nut from a door lock, which is what they work on. I suspect the previous owner PX'd the car for a new one from A.C and they just punt it on , with the view of a profit. Thats the motor trade . As to where you stand on this, thats an awkward one. The vehicle has an MOT and is road legal. The probability of living an average life of the type is pretty low. A.C , judging from people posting on Pistonheads are not the best since AC himself sold the buisiness. Sadly , your chap , spending a decent sum of cash and relying heavily on a car dealer to be up and honest, rather than knowing what to look for should have had an independant inspection. Hindsight is an amazing thing. You could make a complaint with A.C and see what their response is, but it may not be what he hopes for.Chris_D wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 9:15 pm Aye, it's from bonny Scotland and also on the coast apparently.
So, the concensus seems to be its ok to be sold a car in this condition without indicating it to the buyer and classifying it as an 'approved used bmw' as its passed its last mot?
Well fk that in its ear!
Imo theyve taken advantage of a young lad that they could bank on not looking at the mechanicals closely enough as somebody more experienced might have done.
It stinks.

Just on a google found this :
Cazana’s also revealed the areas in the UK with the highest proportion of rusty cars. Clever, huh? Unsurprisingly, there’s a clear link between living near the sea and owning a rusty car. Five of the areas with the rustiest cars in the UK are in Scotland – also not surprising, considering the harsher weather conditions in the north. Without further ado, the top 10 areas for rusty cars are:
10: Yorkshire, Northern England
9: Lincolnshire, Central England
8: Durham, Central England
7: Herefordshire, West Midlands
6: Midlothian, Scotland
5: Banffshire, Scotland
4: Roxburghshire, Scotland
3: Northumberland, North East England
2: Fife, Scotland
1: West Dunbartonshire, Scotland
By contrast, the areas with the fewest rusty cars are mainly in the south of England, with Kent, Surrey, Oxfordshire and Hampshire all highlighted.

Yes, that doesn’t look too bad to me either. Not the best, but close to what I’d expect for anything but a garage queen.

I’m sorry OP but I think you are pissing in the wind on this one. It’s a secondhand car and you still haven’t told us how old it is and how many miles it has done. As others have pointed out it is very much surface rust and frankly I don’t think you have a leg to stand on with this one.

AUC is a guideline, in reality it means nothing. I rejected a car after a day after finding out the service history wasn’t as described. It was a Z4M and only 4 years old so immaculate history was important. That’s when I said it didn’t meet AUC and was advised it was a guideline, meaning at the end of the day they can do what they want.

When I got my Z4 from Marshal BMW in book last year they put an MOT on it the day before collection.
Also replaced brake pads and tried to paint the disk centre bits that go rusty. However, they also skimmed the rear discs to below the tolerance for new pads.
And the headlight washers were blocked. Unlikely they got blocked between the mot and collection.
So they fudged the MOT and also sold a car with working, but fudged brakes.
So yes, AUC means feck all unfortunately.

Nothing in them pics that would ever actually fail a BMW AUC, assuming of course they could be bothered to do these things! Unsightly yes, a fault no. With Arnold Clarke you'd need the wings to be literally hanging off anyway, nearly as bad as Williams BMW in that respect.
At least everything seems to work and be road legal.
A mate of mine bought a 1 year old 8k miles A3 from Blackburn Audi once. The front brakes were that warped that we put it on an MOT brake tester and they were out of balance by over 35%.More than enough to fail an MOT had it been old enough to need one. In the end he got them fixed gratis and a "£1,000 goodwill gesture" on the understanding he didn't complaint to Audi UK.

Ah Scotland !
Flyingfifer posted on here recently how his exhaust bolts had rusted through .. mine were fitted in exactly the same place before his
Mine are still perfect without any corrosion .. but mine isn’t a 365 day car and doesn’t have to put up
With the harsh conditions in Scotland
Last time I was there it was quite noticeable the number of relatively modern cars showing visible external rust !
