driving licence - lost by UPS

Post by bluespit » Tue Jul 09, 2019 4:51 pm

Not been around much since I sold my Z last year but you lot are the wisest car folk I know of so looking for a bit of guidance.

Long story cut short.

I paid UPS £58 to post my driving licence to Canada (I forgot to pack it) with a 48 hour service. This was back on June 14th.

It sat un the UK for 10 days by which time I'd moved from the address on the package.

I asked for it to be returned to the UK as it couldn't get to me in time for the holiday

UPS then lost the licence

They still don't know where it is 23 day later.

I've complained vigorously without any success - they are dreadful to get hold of. they refuse to accept liability and will not even issue a refund for the postage.

One avenue I'm thinking about is using my drivers legal protection but don't know if that will help.

any (sensible!) suggestion welcome.. thanks chaps (and chapesses)
now I'm about to have more time I've suddenly got less toys to play with!

OK for starters can we assume you have all your communications with them emails text messages etc?

Did you take out any insurance cover with them for loss or damage?

How long does their T&Cs say you have to wait before the item is declared 'lost by them'?

Are you able / have you been tracking it?

Have you been in contact with the address at which it was due for delivery?

Might just be a case of waiting the time period in the T&Cs then claiming all the expenses associated with license renewal. Don't think you'll get anywhere claiming for any loss associated with not having your license - hire of car and driver for example. If they are not forth coming after the period in the T&Cs then your drivers legal might have a go for you.

I suppose it may just turn up so its worth keeping an eye on the tracking in case they attempt delivery and you can try and redirect it. If do declare it lost I would want the postage costs back! I've only dealt with UPS once and everything went back to a US based web mail - sad as it is I think you just have to suck it up and play their game then bad mouth them as much as possible on here and any other social media you can find - including their own facebook or twitter if they have it!

Assuming you do get it back once in hand you could have a go for not getting the level of service you paid for (48hrs) - did you by any chance use a credit card for payment - they will refund you the money if you can show (emails etc) that the service was not as stated.

Thanks again, phoned my legal cover people and they think they may be able to help. Lots of possibles there though.

my only 'claim' against them would be for cost of postage plus cost of replacement licence (£20 I think). Its one of those 'matters of principle' and wifey says I'm like a dog with a bone!

unfortunately my friend who posted the licence to me paid using her debit card - that was my first thought.

thanks for the advice

cheers

Has to be over £100 for credit card transactions I believe for them to intervene.
