Experience in a rear wheel drive

Post by ZedConvert » Tue Jul 02, 2019 11:33 am

Hi,

Last year we were advised that Chris Knott couldn't help us as our previous cars had all been FWD.

Our policy is due again this month, so going to give it another go today; I currently have my wife as the named driver (I have Comp on another car)- guessing Chris Knott still won't insure me as named on policy as I won't officially have RWD experience (although I drive the car more than she does) ?

Thanks

Hi, if you've been named on your wife's policy that should be good enough to prove your RWD experience as well as hers. Please do give us a call.

ChrisKnottIns, Thanks... the call handler has gone away and will come back with a quote tomorrow, apparently she needs to refer it... as a jump from 184 to 260BHP is fairly significant (she said)...

next update in 24hrs time

Wow... things have changed. My first car @ 18 was a 12 year old RWD TOHC 1970’s 1750 Alfa Romeo Gulia... made famous as the police cars in the Italien job & a wee bit faster in a straight line than my mates RS2000, though was left for dead in the twisties

No way could afford a newer FWD & those that could we’re paying 3x the cost of my insurance :poke:

Odd, my first rwd car was my ///MR. It was also 110bhp more powerful than any car I had previously owned. Had no problem at all insuring it. The only sticking point was, I had to get a tracker fitted before most insurers would even quote me.

Ironically all my dad's cars, that I had learned to drive in, were rwd though. :D

I remember being a bit surprised at Chris Knott's requirement for previous RWD experience when I went to them for a quote on my 2nd E86. :?

But there was no issue as I had my 1st one for 2 years and my daily at the time was an E46 325ti Compact I'd had for nearly 2 years.

Being of a certain age my first 10 cars were all RWD - thankfully! And the majority since then have been RWD too.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

Well Chris Knott want to charge me an extra £200 for the mods (Stage 1: 184bhp to 260bhp, lip spoiler, 19" non-RFs).

They'll match any other quote I get; does anyone else know a company I can get a reasonable quote from, as a lot won't cover engine mods? I can't pay £200 on top; I have seen other forum members pay around £50.

Definitely come back to us if you do get a better quote as insurers allow us to go underneath if we have evidence that we need to.

The challenge I suggest you will have is how an insurer considers a mod were it ever to be repaired

For example, my insurer are aware I have ‘mods’, yet record my
- 19” OEM CSL’s as ‘BMW wheels of larger diameter than std’
- my B12 kit as ‘suspension modifications’
- Grupp as simply an aftermarket induction kit

I resign myself to the likelihood that should it ever need repair, it will only be repaired back to standard OEM

However, more specialist providers will record the precise details & this is why I believe end up with a higher price... because this will be just more expensive hassle for the repairer

Well... unfortunately on this occasion Chris Knott Ins couldn't get near my best quote.

Maybe next time... I'll keep trying
