Stone chips?

Post by Busterboo » Fri Apr 12, 2019 10:51 pm

After 55k miles, the bonnet now has a dozen stone chips. Is there a way of dealing with them other than a full bonnet re-spray or wrap?

(Strangely, the majority are circular and on the near-side half of the bonnet. Happily, there's no apparent corrosion and little other stone damage to the rest of the front of the car.)

Touch up paint worked wonders for me. You can get way involved with it and sand down the areas and apply the paint, then wax it and such, but my chips were particularly small so the touch up paint and clear coat worked very well. Image

Stone chips?

Post by Phoenixboy » Sat Apr 13, 2019 10:20 am

i am touching in a few on mine buster, but what i did find is even the bmw touch up paint was not a good match on space grey.
ran in to a guy from chips away , and they scan the paintwork to get a more accurate match.
there are apparently 6-8 shade variations, so am re touching up the chips later, so will see if his is better.

touched in the stone chips with the new paint which seems to be a good match.
whilst you will see the chips, they are much less visible with the paint being a good match.

Booked in to have both bumpers resprayed and the stone chips on he bonnet touched in. I have never been any good touching in metalic colours. Slightly simpler job with solid colours. :) Decent job OP.

Have a couple of small chips on the front valance and was supplied with some touch up paint and clear coat when I bought the car. Looking to do it sometime in the next couple of weeks so any advice / guidance would be appreciated by me and I suspect many others.

Out of curiosity, I asked 'Chips Away' if they'd do the work and they - politely & pleasantly - refused, which, considering their brand name, surprised me.

When i went shopping for the Zed i wanted the deep sea blue, but, the one's i looked at all had stone chips and the undercoat being grey showed through. So i went Orion silver.
Try BMW body shop for a respray, they sprayed up an alternative bumper for me after giving the cheapest quote.

I thought that's what they boast about!

I spoke with them today about same thing as I have a few chips and I was turned away!!! Said it had something to do with the water based paint they use, err wtf. Like going to specsavers and being told they don’t do glasses.

i think a lot depends on your local man.
its a franchise, and some are better than others.
my local man mixed me up some paint and charged me nothing.
was prepared to do it, but said the cost against the results with a few minor chips was probably not worth it.
i suppose it depends how bad it is and how long they would need to spend to get the results.
then if its not perfect, people will complain and say for what you have charged me, i may as well have paid the extra and resprayed the bumper or bonnet.
