Smoke - CCV woes / Brand preference M54

Post by Dangti6 » Wed Feb 13, 2019 12:20 pm

Yesterday we had plumes of white/grey smoke from the back of the Z4. Gave it a few runs up the road and it appeared to slow. Eventually it appeared to stop but could smell burnt oil on idle when it did occasionally continue to smoke.

My search suggests this is likely to be the CCV diaphram, a blockage in the pipes or a mix of both. It's the 3.0 M54 engine.

Scouring eBay there appears to be many cheap sets.

Is there a preferable brand to use or is it really advisable to use genuine BMW parts from the dealer? I saw mention of Meyle being
recommended in one thread, and dismissed for being terrible in another. Many sellers on eBay don't mention the brand so it can be a gamble.

I presume the insulated/cold climate hoses would be the suggested version for UK use?

Part numbers I have found:

PCV CRANKCASE VENT VALVE & BREATHER HOSES KIT FOR BMW X3 Z3 Z4 E83 E36 E85
Car : BMW
OEM Part Numbers :
CRANKCASE VENT VALVE : 11617501566
OIL SEPARATOR HOSE : 11617504535
BREATHER HOSES : 11617504536, 11611432559, 11157532649
11617504536, 11611432559, 11157532649, 11617501566, 11617504535

You'd think BMW would do a full kit with one number.

I think you are spot on with your diagnosis. I would avoid the random Ebay ones but every Meyle HD part I have ever bought has always been as good if not better then OEM. I trust the brand a lot.

I was advised to buy an original BMW part as the ebay specials don't tend to fit without a bit of fettling. They are not very expensive from BMW.

Thanks. That's refreshing to hear. Although it wouldn't be the first time I have spent a morning and some hard earned changing parts that didn't need changing!

BMW parts total about £130.

I have managed to source a new unused genuine valve on eBay for a fraction of the new price, so will start taking it apart and get some hoses ordered. My local BMW parts guy suggests that breather hose 11 61 7 504 536 rarely needs changing when people book them in - will see how true that is when I start fiddling. At least they are same/next day parts so easily obtained if required - the car isn't in daily use currently.

Good man. If you could take some pics along the way and perhaps even do a little 'how to' guide, it would be a good asset on the forum.

I replaced my full CCV system back in April '17 all with separate Febi Bilstein components. German made, top quality and fitted perfectly without any fettling. Also used Febi Bilstein cam cover, OFH, throttle body and inlet manifold gaskets too. Again, all great quality and perfect fit. I would highly recommend them

I think it was overdue, don’t you?

Wasn’t a bad job to do. Was more time consuming that you’d imagine for what you actually have to do, but that’s because one or two of the pipes can be fiddly to route correctly (I didn’t remove the inlet manifold).

There are some great videos on YouTube which are worth a watch beforehand.

Oh, and buy a dipstick o ring before you start the job as you’ll disturb the original and you don’t want a leak.
