What's the issue with the DPFs then? Problematic?JamieZ4C wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 4:13 pmI think they're generally a bit better actually. I know what you mean about the Fabia, but I don't think the Octavia is that bad looking. The boot on the hatchback is huge and the estate even bigger again obviously. Grab yourself a decent 1.9 tdi from 2006 prior to when the dpfs were introduced and it would do you proud. Easily remapped too. No point if you can't get over the looks though!tee.gilding wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:16 pmI had been browsing Skoda's, both Octavia's and Fabia's - I just don't like the look of them... Do they carry the same reliability reputation as VW's?

Yes, and expensive. If it goes wrong on a car of the value you're talking about it would likely be a write off. Cleaner for the environment though

Doing a quick search, the 2.0L on the Golf's is prone to DPF problems, but the 1.9 doesn't seem to show up with that as an issue. Likewise the 1.6TDCI seems to show up when searching for "Ford Focus DPF issues". Maybe the two engines I've been spying out in my original list are okay?

This is it, you'll have to do your research. Is it possible the 1.9 tdi and 1.6 tdci (isn't it the PSA hdi?) were around for a while before having dpfs but the 2.0 was introduced with a dpf from the off?tee.gilding wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 4:47 pmDoing a quick search, the 2.0L on the Golf's is prone to DPF problems, but the 1.9 doesn't seem to show up with that as an issue. All guess work on my part of course. Research needed. Don't want to put you off any particular model. Every car has it's faults at the end of the day. Just thought it worth pointing out in case you hadn't given it consideration.

My daily hack is a Skoda Octavia VRS MK1 of 2002 vintage. Absolutely brilliant cars. They go like the proverbial off a shovel and have all the
VW/Audi bits for reliability. Over 16 years I have replaced brake pads, a caliper the back box and a starter motor. It has done 155 K now and is still going strong. If it dies then I will probably replace it with a MK2 from around 2005 say.

Yeah unfortunately I'm looking for something bigger than a Fiesta. A Focus or Golf are as small as I want to go, and only if they're an estate...

Being a dedicated BMW fan these days my daily is an E91 325i Touring.
But that doesn't fit the brief - but maybe a diesel E46 Touring would fit the bill? Or perhaps an early E91 Touring (but I don't know if they have a dpf). That's what I'd be after - even the 320td has plenty of grunt. A 330d must be something else.

No thanks! I'm getting rid of my old Fiat, don't want to replace it with another Fiat! I need something bigger anyhow! Best of luck with your sale though.

I'd love to stick with the brand but unfortunately they're either really ratty or sky high mileage (250k plus) at the sub £2k mark. That or their tax is so high I might as well not bother. Hence why I've been checking out other brands as options. But a 318d would be perfect if I had a few extra k to find a decent example!Mr Tidy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:13 pm Being a dedicated BMW fan these days my daily is an E91 325i Touring.

That's a shame - my 1st BMW was an E46 320td Compact back in 2005 (because I didn't try the 325ti version).
Good luck finding something suitable - would a diesel Mondeo work? They're supposed to drive well.

I know reliability was never their selling point, but the later Alfa’s are no less reliable than any other marque, and the parts are relatively cheap.
If I needed the extra space over my 147 (which I’m doing 25,000 miles a year in and averaging 50mpg on a 210 mile, 80mph motorway cruise), then I’d look out for a 156 Sportwagon, although they’re not the easiest cars to find in diesel form, and the 1.9 16v JTDm is the sweet spot, but...
