Hardtop roof and boot not working
Hi, all.
Jumped in the car this morning with no issues. Got a mile or so down the road and the roof warning light and chime came on. Pulled over and went through the processes of closing the roof. Unexpectedly, the windows came down and everything has stopped working.
Windows won't go up, roof won't budge, boot locked.
Any help appreciated!

Hardtop roof and boot not working
Hi Bez, whereabouts are you based? There’s a few members on here that have successfully fixed e89 roof problems before.
Have you tried operating the roof in the opposite direction to see if it will go back?

Hardtop roof and boot not working
Update. Had to drive it to work this morning and managed to get windows up. Sound like some microswitch somewhere.
Chime and alarm came on again. Tried both open and close operations. Close operation opened the windows again and then stopped operating. Luckily the windows have closed again after getting to work.

The time my windows got stuck down it was a loose connector on the door card to the window switch.
Couldn't then cycle roof and windows stuck down.
It had been playing up for some time, where to operate the windows i had to thump the door arm rest.
Eventually stopped working.
Door card off, i removed, cleaned and replaced the connector to the switch, all fine since.

All working again.. left car locked up and went back to it after a coffee and some harsh words.
Managed to open the boot. Boot tray was up and nowhere near the closed position Engaged it and everything is as it should be.
I'm assuming that there are switches to confirm engaged/disengaged for the tray with having a fault light.

I think the tray position is confirmed with a hall sensorBez wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 9:54 am All working again.. left car locked up and went back to it after a coffee and some harsh words.

It’s a bit like a metal detector, it knows when a metal object (roof strut) is in close proximity & gives an electronic acknowledgment that a particular roof movement has been completed, this lets the next stage begin.

Car is booked in to take a look at the roof problem.
All I can see from it's intermittent fault that it is faulting first thing in the morning. This could be due to temperature change (part expansion/contraction) or battery drain overnight. Does this ring true with anyone?

Sounds like its just a microswitch problem.
The part is not expensive, or difficult to fit.

I took the car in to the company I bought through. They booked it in with a BMW specialist. Got it back with feedback stating we'd opened the roof when driving the vehicle as the fault code had indicated that. Told them that that wasn't the case as we had purchased the car with the fault, but it had cleared by the next time wed used it.
Obviously trying to shift the blame on to the new owners to remove their responsibility. They cleared for fault codes.
First outing, visiting relatives in Blackpool, no problems on the way out, roof up and down with no chimes. Stoped for some lunch and it goes wrong. Won't let me close the roof.. my arse was twitching leaving it open and outside a pub. Seagull everywhere..
Anyway.. pint and a meal, and everything was working again.
Booking it in again.
