Hi guys
Just come from an e93 m3, the z4 has seriously caught my eye so I’m looking for as much help as possible looking for a nice one! I’ve not had chance to drive one yet and know very little about them, my main thing is a good bit of noise and performance so how do they compare to the m3?
Sorry for jumping straight in with the usual questions but I need to get back in the seat ASAP
Thanks

I take it you’re going to be looking for a 35i / 35is??

Very different engine / power delivery so it will feel completely different.

Extracting noise isn’t an issue but again, completely different soundtrack.

My 28i when standard would stick with an E92 M3 until about 90mph. We were both shocked by this. So I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by the performance.

I think the Z4 feels more special in a way when you’re behind the wheel. I love the E92 M3 and seriously considering one but it’s a bit bland inside.

You’re going to miss 8000rpm a lot!!!

Hi steve
Thanks for the helpful reply, your car would suit me well lol it’s gotta be white, I know what you mean about the 8k Rev range I’ve not dismissed another e93 m3! If you were in the market again what would you go for? I didn’t think I’d be looking at a four pot turbo ever again (Impreza) guessing their fairly easy to remap? Or is it a waste of fine on these?

Certainly worth considering , the 2.0i being as tuneable , the 28i seems to sit in a strange sector pricewise & whilst i wouldn't knock it as we see the twinnies dropping to reasonable money i wouldn't buy a 4 over a 6 .
Guess start with your ideal budget , mileage , spec & see where that pitches you , last month or 2 we have seen a few cracking 35s through the forum at very reasonable asks

If I were in the market again now what would I get? I’d of started with a 35iS or something else all together

I love my Z4 but modifying them isn’t easy (there’s no market for parts).

As you all know I had a 28i - and had a few encounters with M cars - both on track and down the stip.

My 28i was stage 2, and was just as quick as an M3 E92 down the strip - doing 13.5 Secs - as the issue with M3 was launch and getting the power down.

However I have moved over to an M2, from my Z4 - and for a long time did not get the M2 - it did not feel special. My Z4 had KW3's and was an B road warrior - and easily out handled heavier cars through on the Broads. However bigger displacement showed it self from stock 35is when reaching over 80 MPH.

28i vs 35i/35is are very different cars - depends what your looking for.

Comparing to the M2, its only when you push it becomes alive, and have to say its ability to corner and shoot out of an corner is amazing. After a recent day out, against GT-R's and R8 V10's is was able to show it was far superior on the Broads. But lacked past on open roads.

If you want to have fun on B-roads then a 28i is a great car - fast and frugal. However, if your looking for a great open road GT car then 35is is great - but lacking through the corners. However, adding an LSD is a must as well as coilovers if looking at 35is

However, you have to change the suspension, on any option you consider even the adaptive suspension is more GT than a road warrior.

However I do miss the Z4 - really badly

I’m looking at spending around 20k and was hoping for the dct box, am I right in thinking that’s the only box in the 35is? I’ve seen a few with paddle shift but there not 35is’s so is that a different gearbox?

DCT is 35iS only and the only box it came with.

Other paddle shift will most likely bevtge ZF 8 speed box (I have this in my 28i) and it’s superb.

I thought you could spec the 35i with DCT although why would anybody want to and not just get a 35is

First one seems expensive and the second one would depend on spec but price is at least justified for silly low mileage.

To give you an idea, I paid £20k for mine but that was nearly 2 years ago in the middle of the winter. Mine had 35k miles, was 2 years old and has a very high spec.
