ive had/got an e46 - the 330ci is a good all rounder but NO where near as good fun as a z4 , doest feel anywhere near as fast - even with the same engine - saying that, I am on my 28th E46 now so I must like em  think a e90 330d mapped manual would be a good shout, very good pace and plenty roomy enough

lovely! seem to be 5-8k now! appreciating classic?

how did it drive? I need a bigger car after my z4 and want to get a 330 because it'll have back seats and should still be a decent fun daily.

i know, so gutted seeing the prices now!

Drove really nice, I still have a 325ci coupe, they are not fun in any sense of the word, drive nice, comfortable, reasonable on fuel as is your Z4, they are cheap to run, as all parts are easily accessible, a lot moreso than Z4 stuff - a front wing I picked up for my drift car from euro car parts last week was £36 , as was a radiator (£40) they are pretty practical too as all coupes have 60/40 split fold seats.

After going from a 3.0i Z4 to an M3 myself I can tell you that they are quite different and I don't regret it all one bit.

One thing I would say though is maintenance is no where near the same level as the Z4, some items are over triple the price (M Tax) and services cost a fair bit more too.

But one is an M car and shouldn't loose much going forward and also it feels a lot more special with that S54 under the bonnet.

Finding a good one now is becoming harder as well so if serious about it make sure you do your research and if you have any questions about them feel free to ask her or drop me a Pm :)

I wouldn't be selling yours for that price either id hold one to it for that price or ill give you that in cash to project it myself. :P

Thanks for the offer! :)

I'm honestly torn and tempted by a saloon so on my to test drive list I have

lexus gs300/430
e39 530i
330ci clubsport or just coupe
is250 lexus

If I decide to go for e46 anything in particular to look out for on 330s?

The usual pre facelift zed issues with the M54 like the whole coolant system is garbage so waterpump radiator and expansion tank. The lollipop bushes and the achillies heel of the e46 rust. Most of them are scabby round the rear arches now as are the front wings. Aside that though not much else :)

Well I'm a fair bit nearer to you, and my daily is a 325ti Sport Compact (neither a saloon nor a Coupe) but thought by many to be the best driving E46 - I can't comment as it's the only one I've had! But you'd be welcome to have a go in mine. The bonus is that the Compacts don't seem to rust as much for some reason.

As Jamie says the cooling system tends to need a refresh (mine had one just after 80K miles) so if you find one that has had it done that's a result.

Other than that it's mostly age related stuff like suspension bushes and joints, brake hoses, etc. Oh, and I had a PAS pipe split that cost me just over £300 at my local BMW Indy for replacement - maybe EPAS isn't all bad! :)
Coupes because stunning!

Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

Well I got some prices for stuff.

First wheels.

I'll have to post pics but they need a refurb, either for selling as it needs to look good, or for my own satisfaction if I keep.

Exel came highly recommended, they even remove/pickup and drop off/refit and lend a set of BMW wheels while doing them.

Thinking about removing mine and using axle stands then two long journeys out with a boot and a half full of wheels, or leaving my car elsewhere all adds up.

They look to do lots of OCD Porsche owners wheels so must be pretty good.

£500 a set all in.

Seems ok given a good coaters near me is £40 in fuel and 4hrs round trip twice, and all the hassle, and with many no real guarantee on quality.
Then they'll be charging £80 a wheel or maybe £90 with tyres refitting.
Exel have an amazing FB page with tons of examples.
So an extra £100 over any other place, knowing they're used by people with £100k+ 911s, is reassuring.

Service.

Insp2, brake fluid, coolant.

BMW wanted £720 to do above plus aircon.
Autohaus in York (well recommended) wanted £620 to do same sans aircon, but also doing cam cover and oil filter housing gaskets.

I figure £150 ish saved using Autohaus pays for doing wheels at a better place, and I can do aircon anywhere for £50-£75.

Is the BMW SH really so important now? Will it add £150 to price *if/when* I sell?

Part of me thinks yes, but then if its cost neutral it's a lot of faff going to BMW too.

To be fair I have a more local BMW garage but they've failed to be good carers of my car in the past (wing top corrosion thread)

Still not 100% on this either.

Then just £175 for seat sensor parts and a day of tinkering.

Maybe the b4 rear dampers.

Then alignment.

Any other insp2 check jobs that seem important.

Then I can run it safe and sound and in good order... or sell it and hopefully come out cost neutral on these additions vs trade in price!

Hmmm

Interesting concept.

I'm trying to 'logically' think of ways of keeping my current 3.0si and also have the Z4M. Maybe keep SI as daily drive and Z4M as weekend car!? haha

@Mr Whippy I'm not as seasoned as other peeps, but I initially thought £2.8k seems reasonable. Perhaps push to £3.5k given that you have such a good history.

I think it would be a great way to get into Zed's that's for sure.

Have you used them? I was asking a few weeks ago about garages near me with only one reply that was close (in Leeds) have used Atlas BMW “Specialists” in York who tried to overcharge me twice and still damaged my car and said nothing and pretended they hadn’t noticed/done it. Won’t be using them ever again and hope that no one else will be either.
