mobility kit tray- expensive!

Post by Attilio » Wed Dec 06, 2017 1:51 pm

hello fellow Z4M owners!,

I discovered that the "tray" that holds the mobility kit has been manhandled and snapped off the bolts that secure it to the battery (see red circle in attached image) :x

My Z4M is being looked after to fix an oil leak from the diff so I asked the BMW dealer the cost of the replacement of this part. I was quoted something like £175... for a piece of polystyrene??? :o
  • Have you guys suffered from the same problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Remedies?
as always, thanks in advance

Attilio

It might be worth registering on the ' BMW Z4 Owners Club UK' Facebook page and contacting Carl Owen. He is part stripping his Z4M Coupe interior as his car will be competing in Time Attack next season. :)

JESUS! For a bit of polystyrene, probably costs pennies to make.. Can you not just fit "penny" washers, ie bigger than fitted to secure it?

Mine has been broken for years, but it’s never been an issue as the cover stops it moving anyway.

I’d be more concerned that you extensive toolkit is missing :poke:

 the extensive took kit is only "missing" temporarily

yes, indeed: some type of washer or a contoured bracket across the two anchoring points is what I will try to fabricate.

shameful that they are asking that amount of money for a "silly" part

Hi Bradz,

thanks for the heads-up!
I understand the location of the battery in the "M" models is dictated by the different exhaust system...the roadsters have a different battery cover I think...

all,
any contributions on this topic?

If you want to make a decent permanent repair: carefully cover the top surface of the tray with cling film and then cut some thin fibreglass fabric to cover over it completely with necessary overlaps of all the joints and then soak it with epoxy resin and let it dry completely. When it's set, the clingfilm will easily peel off the fibreglass You can then trim the fibre glass to give it smooth edges. You could use carbon fibre if you're bothered about the final appearance or spray paint it. Finish it to whatever standard suits you.

Do you mean the polystyrene has broken, leaving some beneath the nut? If so, can’t you just glue the piece back? This is what I’ve done and it’s held for three years.

Is it part# 51473424016?
If I look up Stealerprices here its €122 (incl. VAT), so about £108,--
Still ridiculously expensive but I'd rather pay that than almost £70 more....

Battery is in the same location on M Roadster and M Coupe. Only standard Z4s have it in the boot floor. That said, the battery cover is different for each of the M applications, as the coupe has more room there.

Hi Guidok,

No idea of part number as I fainted when dealer rang to deliver the bad news :)

Thanks but not going to buy it as it is flimsy and sure it will easily break again; I have in mind a way to fix it but I need to get hold of a strip of metal...I will shape it to follow the contour of the piece of polystyrene and drill two holes in correspondence of the retaining bolts...

It’s not just M pricing - I need a plastic cover / tray for the through load hole in the rear seats behind the armrest in our 3er... £112 :o

I do t have the mobility kit in my car anymore, it’s out of date and replacement gunk is hard to come by... or was when I looked. Got a slime kit now.

I have a Roadster and the battery cover is plastic, not polystyrene.
