GM5 module replacement
I replaced mine recently myself. You need BMW SSS Progman software to do it (or INSTA P I guess). I looked at the part number of mine and then used RealOEM.com to find the possible alternatives and then waited for one on ebay to come up at the right price.
I eventually bought a later version than my original for £40. Z4 ones seem to average over £60 normally.
When you install the ebay one, the car will start but it needs programming. Also the remote locking will not work now.
This shaky video gives you an idea of the programming method using SSS progrman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4qfRK2RJ-8
After programming you need to re sync your keys by this method. https://www.bmwgm5.com/Key_Recode.htm
I then used Carly to code the module with my preferences etc.
The only problem I had was my version of SSS Progman had a bug that meant it wouldn't program until the battery was over 13V even though it was. I installed another version then all was OK.

It's normally the relays that fall in these. Not expensive or difficult to replace yourself.

Mine went about a year ago, relays were not easy to come by and the solder was rock hard (and yes I have decent kit and know how to use it)
decided to send it away for about £30 and get a warranty, easy to fit and perfect repair.

now I'm about to have more time I've suddenly got less toys to play with!
