Z4 Roof Motor Replacement
Likewise the same today, possibly after you
Luckily mine was still pristine after renewing in '14 but the skill Ross demonstrates and the care taken in completing the job is outstanding
no more paranoia about getting it wet now
As you, I would recommend anyone in the South with similar issues to contact him and have a little magic worked .
Thanks again Ross

Z4 Roof Motor Replacement £550
Hi Bowser123,
I have a 2007 Z4 which i have had around 1 week, the first time i popped the roof down it wouldnt go back up again I can hear the roof motor working in the background so it could be an issue with the roof motor or the hyraulics.
i was wondering if you're still helping people with this issue?
I'm based in Richmond Surrey so not far from you.
thanks Mikey

Hi bowser134,
I'm also looking for a relocate/replace+relocate depending on the state of the motor - it's not dead but seems to act up;
Could you please PM me a phone number/e-mail address, looks like I am too new to PM?
Keen to get it working "right" as I've recently bought the car and want to get it in a decent shape
Cheers & have a nice weekend.

I have replaced 8 of these now for forum members including Worcester_spoon & most recently Scott1074. I am a senior technician who has worked for BMW for 10 years.
I know most aren't using there roofs this time of year but if you know your motor intermitently works or is getting slow it's a great time to get it done ready for the good weather.
Happy New Year!

Z4 Roof Motor Replacement £550
Hi Bowser134. I have just replaced the roof motor in my Z4, however I still cant get it to work. When I press the roof button in the car the motor runs for a few seconds them stops. I have tried switching the cables on the motor just in case I had them on the wrong way round but this makes no difference. Any ideas what could be wrong?bowser134 wrote:As many of you know dealers charge around £1200 for this repair.

You may be hearing the electric motor in the roof headliner unlatching the hooks that hold the roof to the windscreen? In which case the electro-hydraulic pump is not activating at all. What lights do you get on the roof button? I don't think it could be the microswitch in the boot, as I believe the roof won't even unlatch if that's the case. Did you test the roof motor before fitting it, ie, 12V battery connected to the terminals on the bottom of the motor to make sure it's working?[email protected] wrote:Hi Bowser134. Is the Bowden cable released? Check the boot and make sure the red handle is 'locked' into its slot to release the bypass valve on the motor.
Can you lift/lower the roof easily by hand. If so, it could be the bypass valve - check that cable in the boot again.
If there seems to be hydraulic pressure, ie, you can lift or lower the roof by hand with a lot of pressure on the roof, it may be the roof just needs cycling several times to bleed the system. This is best done with two people, but you can do it by yourself - if the roof is up, press and hold the lower/raise button and reach up and try to apply pressure on the roof once it's unlatched from the windscreen to guide it down. Once down, do the same again but lift the roof by hand. Hopefully you'll find that the roof will reach a certain point and take over by itself to complete raising/latching. Do this a few times until the roof raises/lowers by itself.
If none of the above work, check the fuse for the soft top, its located behind the glove box if I recall.

Hi Bowser134.
The pump motor does run, I have manually lifted the hood up and down, the Bowden cable is free and I have checked the fuse etc. I will try all again. The only thing I can think of is that the hood sensors are out of sync. I have booked the car in to a BMW specialist to check for faults. Thanks for your help.

Hi Ross
Thanks for getting back to me. The answer is Yes and No. I took the car to a independent BMW garage (PC Autocare Swindon) to have the car checked for faults as the only thing I could think of was that the hood was out of sink with the cars computer. However I was told it wasn't and it was the hydraulic pump that was not working. I asked them to replace it as I was getting p'ed off at this stage. However when I collected the car the hood wouldn't lock down when in the stowed position. The mechanic gave me some excuse that this was due to the fact that I had removed the plastic cover between the two seats and when this and the protection tray in the boot was replaced the hood would close properly. ie it was my fault it wasn't locking. I will be leaving a negative feed back on this guys work but in the meantime I have now got this problem to sort out. Also the windows don't return to their closed position when the hood is raised. This has take all the joy out my ownership of this car (had it for 6 years).
