Changing M54 to S54...
Hi!
I just stumbled over an S54 3.2L Engine ... to a very good price..
just to make a long story short.. it's in my garage now
it's naked.. just engine, no sensors, generator etc.. a winter project..
so now to my question, is it anyone here on the forum that has done this swap?
and I searched on realoem for engine wiring harness and noticed that it differs from the M3 and the Z4M... anyone know what the difference is?

The DME is different which will be one reason for different loom. Different connector on it.

It could be a big project as there are a LOT of differences with the ancillaries and parts you will need to get it installed. I'd start by checking RealOEM which gives part breakdown diagrams and part numbers for some idea. Good luck with the project

That'll be some project! Good luck and keep us updated, will be interesting. As mentioned different DME will mean different wiring to an M3 although similar in many respects regarding sensors etc. I imagine sorting the wiring loom out will be the hardest part tbh.
While you've got the engine out I would do some decent preventive maintenance like a VANOS refurb, checking out bearing shells etc. the stuff that's a pain when the engine is in situ basically! Good luck

Yes, it's a big project..
it's going to be a total refurbishment, going down to bits and pieces...
but i'm in no hurry

That's one hell of a winter project. Fortunately your country has long winters.
Have you thought about fitting it to something smaller and lighter rather than turning your 3.0 into a 3.2? It would make for a phenomenal kit car!

Changing M54 to S54...
a small update,
1st winter just passed... but 2nd is coming soon
The bottom is flat-grinded and drilled to 1st over dim, crankshaft controlled and polished, connecting rods checked, new Wiseco pistons and bearings is on the shelf, waiting
now missing an oil cooler and engine wiring.
need another differential as well, preferably with ratio 3.85 and LSD
Right now I'm working on a little plastic project will be an M front bumper in fiberglass / carbon fiber
I have also put in brackets for the four-point belts.
more updates to come
