Chaps,
Just booking my car in now, BMW are doing reduced priced servicing on older models, including ours.

https://www.bmw-service.co.uk

Bring your own oil and they should quote around £700, obviously plus your own oil. Oil must be to spec and unopened etc etc.

I believe there was a thread on this recently. Some dealerships were not sticking to this or missing out key parts of the service.

Some were changing the price when you got there, stating they had input the vehicle details incorrectly, or were not doing the valve clearances.

The only thing the website says they're doing on that Insp.2 over a Insp.1 is the spark plugs (£60 a set) - and the valve clearances aren't even done in Insp.1 - so I don't know when they expect them to be done, or they're just hoping you won't notice and will just buy a new car from them when it goes bang.

As well as undergoing a comprehensive inspection, the oil and oil filter in your BMW are replaced along with the all important microfilter. The spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter (diesel) and engine air filter are also replaced to maintain performance and efficiency.

As part of this full service, BMW trained technicians will remove the used oil from your engine, replace the used oil filter with a new, Genuine BMW filter and then refill your BMW engine using only BMW approved oil. The used cabin microfilter(s) will also be replaced with Genuine BMW filter(s) helping to maintain a clean breathing environment inside your car. To ensure your engine remains at its optimum, the engine air filter and spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter (diesel) will also be replaced with Genuine BMW parts. Your technician will also thoroughly inspect your BMW against a comprehensive list of electrical and fluid systems for safety and functionality. In addition, your BMW will be returned to you washed and vacuumed with an updated BMW service history.
  • Check lighting system.
  • Check instrument and indication field lighting, check heater blower.
  • Check Horn, headlight flasher and hazard warning lights.
  • Seat belts: check condition of belt strap, function of inertia reel mechanism, locking reel, and belt buckle.
  • Check battery: acid level, charge state
  • Heating / air conditioning microfilter(s) is replaced
  • Body checked for corrosion.
  • Diagnosis brief test.
  • Replace engine oil and oil filter.
  • Check coolant level.
  • Check windscreen washer and intensive cleaning systems: fluid levels.
  • Check Steering fluid reservoir: fluid level.
  • Replace spark plugs (if petrol).
  • Intake silencer: replace air filter element.
  • Check brake pad thickness
  • Check brake disc surfaces and thickness.
  • Check steering components: check for clearance, leaks, damage and wear.
  • Check under-body including all visible parts: check for damage, leaks and corrosion.
  • Check brake lines and connections: visually inspect for leaks, damage and correct position.
  • Check handbrake function.
  • Check tyres for inflation pressures, external condition, tread depth and tread pattern.
  • Replace main fuel filter (if diesel).
  • Exterior is washed
  • Interior is vacuumed
  • BMW Service history is updated

All Genuine BMW parts come with a BMW 2 year fitted parts warranty.
I've highlighted what 'work' they're actually doing and what's replaced. The rest is just a cursory examination to see what else they can find to charge you for.

You will may notice that there's no mention of the following items, that are listed in on the full Inspection 2 checklist:
  • Valve clearance measurement & adjustment (£200-£300)
  • Differential oil replacement (£100)
  • Gearbox oil replacement (£100)

If you only count the highlighted items, and assume a £120/hour labour cost, then the parts & labour for those items is about £400.

Add in another hour for all the checks and you're at £520.

Add in another £10 for the valet-monkey and you're at £530.

So they're screwing you out of about £200 for the sake of it - and I can't see them reducing it by £130 if you bring in your own oil. Even at BMW prices, the oil is less than £20/litre (so about £100 for the lot).

I'd be more worried at how much care they'd take with your car if you're taking all their margin away by buying all the parts from ECP and asking them for £300 off the price :?

Just to add my own experiences of this when questioning a dealership over my service history, they stated that gearbox and diff oil is not needed on our cars... when pointing out to them that it specifically states it in the manual and even sent over scanned images of it to their service manager, they still didn't accept it should be done. No offer of dropping prices of course.

Er not with Sytner! That's just generic text from their website, for non old skool M models.

Sytner already emailed to ask for the car for two days, in order to check the valve clearances. Includes Gearbox and LSD oil. Courtesy car too.

I have email correspondence from them stating all of this and also the discount on the oil. YMMV!

When I enquired about what is included specifically for the Z4M, they sent this screen print.

Anyway, I posted this info hoping it would help some peeps. :D

Not bad if they let you supply your own oil.

BMW Hudds confirmed the same. Need the car for two days for inspection II service.

Yeah, I supplied the oil for the Inspection I a couple of years back. Unfortunately buying the Castrol oil in 4ltr bottles, you end up with half a bottle left over each time. They won't use an unsealed bottle and also check the date.

It's not so much the £70 quid saving, more the lack of wincing when you get the bill from BMW.

Well I'm pleased to say BMW Halliwell Jones in Wilmslow have agreed to £61 for a brake fluid change and thus will agree to the full services at the prices above. It took a lot of tooing and froing about what was covered, but they have agreed to stick to pricing and follow my hand book.

A little bit off topic but mine is in for insp l today, they asked me drop it off this morning and collect this evening. They've just called to say they need it over night, to reset the tappets in the morning when it is stone cold. Reset that tappets on insp l? Really?? As in take them out , drain them and let them refill ?

Tappets are solid in our cars, not hydraulic. The clearances need to be set when the engine is cold, hence why they need over night.

I have been told that inspection 1 is the same as 11 but no new plugs and the gearbox and diff oil aren't changed.

I just got inspection 11 at Bmw Inverness for £700 plus I also got the vanos oil filter changed which cost a bit extra ( can't remeber).

If they say they need the car for 2 days to do the valve clearances why not drop it with them at the end of the day, they can check the cold valves first thing next morning.

There is a specific M value service that covered the E46 M3 and the similar aged M5. When I asked about it for the Z they told me it wasn't on the list but they'd do the Z for the same price as the E46 M3 which I think was £899 and would follow the proper service schedule. The M5 was cheaper as it didn't need the valve clearances doing in the same way.

Wow that's great. Did you supply the oil at that price?

No. Was going to get all sorts but was looking for an Indy but couldn't get a recommendation so wanting someone with experience went to a dealer. Keeps the full BMW history anyway.

Anyway ran out of time for the two days I had off work so never even asked the dealer in the end so am all standard.

Glad saw this post!!!
Well the Bmw service link
I don't know if you guys saw over Xmas
But my inpec2 came up as £429!!!
All oils diff box etc etc n cold clearance etc
Paid £49 for brake fluid too

As at time had 8k on clock and was £289 for inpec1
Oil change so no brainer asked for 2;)
We checked double even triple checked price
Agreed and booked

Turned up 2 weeks later to
"Nope, not doing it for that price!"
Long story short
It got done for that price, then went back to owner of Bmw garage, and he went nuts at service guy

Now he's gone and I'm always in garage:)
