Another Roof Motor Replaced by Bowser134
Had my roof motor replaced by Ross today. Arrived at 8:00am and the car was ready to go by about 11:00am. Super nice bloke, BMW trained and certainly knows what he is doing.
I had the motor replaced just over 2 years ago by an Indy in the Midlands (PM me if you want to know who) who apparently didnt do such a good job as I thought! The motor had been fitted in a very slapdash fashion and water had been allowed to flood the housing.
All redone now and a super neat job as well. The drains have been 'rodded' and the silly bungs removed (as recommended by BMW he told me).

Did you not think to ask him if he could move the motor to the boot to save any further problems.

Ah but I did - however its not something he has considered previously. He did say that he thought the hydraulic lines etc were too short. I think that he would have to spend some time experimenting and as he dosent have a Z that could be difficult. I did point out that if he was successful a large queue would form instantly.maxman wrote:Did you not think to ask him if he could move the motor to the boot to save any further problems.
Perhaps someone on here would like to take themselves to Germany with a video camera and get it done!!!

Thanks Ross really pleased but strangely enough the motor itself has no signs of any particular water damage even though as you say it was deeply immersed I've tried it out and there's still no sign of life. The rotor spins freely but I haven't tried the diesel soak yet!

In my opinion, the motor is very rarely the problem, it's the water!
I've fixed 2 now, recently my own. The motor was fine, but when you fill the casing with water, it has nowhere to get out. The connections eventually short out, meaning the motor cannot draw current.
Both cars had completely clogged drains. Just make sure these are clear! I also completely water tightened the motor casings with RTV silicone.
When fixing a soggy motor, drop it in a tub of diesel and spin the motor by hand to remove any contaminants. I then shook dry and sprayed with WD40 (water disperser!). I repeated the process and then oiled the motor generously with motor oil. Ensure the sponge insulation is perfectly dry before re assembly.
The motor now works better than new. It's both faster and quieter than ever. Oh and it saves you several hundred pounds

Guys, as a total newbie, how does one check these drainage channels and motor are clear of water when buying a secondhand zed? Is it a simple visual inspection? Are there any early warning indications when a roof motor is about to fail?
I wonder if the 986 Boxster suffers similar problems? (not that I want to buy a boxster, I am a Zed lover !!)

Hard to tell when buying a second hand zed the condition of the motor because it's not visable. Normally the motor starts being noisy or slow when failing but some just die with no warning.K3P0 wrote:Guys, as a total newbie, how does one check these drainage channels and motor are clear of water when buying a secondhand zed? When buying a zed I would definitely factor in the price of a new motor in your budget but once replaced you can look after it to prevent further failures
