Z4 E89 'jumpy' on the first two gears..

Post by ld2x07 » Mon Mar 16, 2015 1:10 pm

Hi all,

I recently picked up a 2010 Z4 30i (love it)

One minor issue i'm having though is that the car tends to lurch in the first two gears and the power doesn't seem to come through very smoothly.

I thought it was just me but I let my brother drive it and he came back with a complaint about that and he had to bring acceleration in before taking the clutch the whole way up to avoid it. I told him I avoid it by rev'ing it higher in the first two gears.

Its pretty disconcerting though and I always have to be aware of it. Pulling away quickly from stop is not as simple as it should be.

Is this an issue anyone else has had?

Hi mate, surprised you haven't had a reply and you have probably got it sorted now but i would suggest that you need the CDV (clutch delay valve) removing. Lot of folk have removed theirs, local indie around here charges @ £30 for the job.

Also it sounds like you might need to replace the coil packs, easily done yourself.

Cheers tug.

Hi Tug,

Thanks for the response!

I actually haven't managed to find a solution so I appreciate your thoughts

I'll look into getting these changes made and fingers crossed

Quick question - from a look around it seems like there is quite a divide on this one. I'll keep researching but would you generally remove it alltogether or replace it with a modified CDV? (p.s. what difference if there between no CDV and a mod??)

Think Tug is confusing the E89 with the E85 mate :?
Does this happen when your in sport mode? If so its a common complaint to new owners and usually disappears as you get used to the Zed :)

oh.. so no magical CDV fix? From looking around online it sounded like the CDV was exactly the problem I've been having.. :|

I don't typically keep it in sport mode but I'll try it over the next week and see if it still swips my head back and forth

I've always done snappy gear changes but the Z4 won't let you especially between 1st and 2nd - doesn't seem to matter if comfort or sport mode. Just getting used to easing the clutch out a little more slowly and now getting a smoother change. Does the E89 have a CDV?

We had ours removed last year and the changes between 1st and 2nd greatly improved.
The CDV can be removed and the pipes rejoined without any other parts fitted, just rebleed the system after removing.

I was hoping that would be the case. Thanks :)

I'll see about getting this done too. There does seem to be some confusion elsewhere online also about whether or not the E89 has a CDV..?

I presume removing it will invalidate the three year warranty though. The car is just 11 months old.

Would be useful if someone did a unit that looks like this but in fact does nothing just to keep the impression it's still there

I think there is but it would be money for nothing.
You could remove it and run a drill through it to widen the hole that restricts the flow of fluid then put it back in place.
