Much better off knowing and buying well than buying poorly and it putting you off the brand for life.
Yes, that was my thinking about those 2 cars for sale on here. They've had some of the big ticket jobs done - others for sale often haven't so even if they are cheaper to buy you can soon end up spending more overall.

flimper wrote: Wed Aug 11, 2021 3:20 pm Does amaze me how often the car is talked down on here, must put off new buyers. Overpriced, bearing shells, vanos etc etc.
Hardly talking it down, the main point is buying a high miler by the time you've spent the money you could have a low miler because there is a discrepancy of values between high and low milage cars.....

Its not putting off buyers its educating you could get yourself in a financial hole. Thats my experience so far so not sure why its an issue discussing it.
If I came on here without knowing the car and scanned the forum for a while, I'd come to the conclusion that the car is fragile and needs lots of money spent on it or it would go bang. Annoys me as this is not my experience, so far at least. Not a personal attack on you, just the straw that broke the camels back
Agreed, I had a whinge the other month about that, I've had my car 10 years and the only money I've spent has been upgrades, servicing and tyres!

If you look at the number of zeds on the road, there's no problem and look at the number of M3s with over 100k on, again no problem.

It is fair to point out though you could get unlucky and some cars haven't been looked after quite so good so there are things to put right. I think that was more Tom's point, buying a cheapy could end up costing more basically

Ultimately there are really only 2 big spends on these compared to other "sports cars" you may buy - the vanos and the rod bearings. As mentioned, browsing the forum as someone new to the M could really scare you off when you see comments regarding these. I had the same when I purchased my Audi RS2 back in the day, the horror stories of snapped conrods, blown turbos and massively expensive costs to change the cambelt etc were enough to make you run for the hills! My experience was far from that, as is my experience with my MR so far. Noted there are 100's of M3's with well over 100k still going strong without issue and lets face it, does the average Joe in the street know there are potential issues with the rod bearings...probably not. I know a specialist forum will highlight these issues but as with any forum, you only get to hear about the horror stories. We have heard stories of low mileage cars spinning a bearing and S54's doing in excess of 160K without issue.
I personally don't have an issue with high mileage cars as this was generated by the second hand car market anyway. My MR has just tripped over 100K and I suspect it probably won't blow up and melt into a lump of scrap metal anytime soon as I am extremely sympathetic with how she is driven and warmed up. I also bought the car to use and enjoy not to look at with an eye on future worth or resale value. Some of the high mileage cars could actually turn out to be a good buy and you are less likely to lose a lot of money come resale time by adding to the mileage - I think any tidy M will always be worth 9-10K.

I'm not put off high miles as long as the history and maintenance are there, hence the ask for help to see if anyone knows their past. I'd give them a good drive/inspection first as well to be sure it ain't a lemon.
I'm not after an 'investment' car, just something that won't be worth pennies in a few years, something I can do some work on, drive a little bit and not lose much money, if any.
It would be a 3rd car as well, so won't see much road time, more for me to tinker with and chip away at. I cut my teeth on MX-5's years ago and now I'm wanting to put time into something that has a bit more complexity and power.
I'm also more inclined to want to work on and drive a high mileage car, if I got one with lower miles I'd probably want to baby it which isn't my intent.

I've also owned an MC in the past and went through all the servicing/costs so not to worried about that, insurance and tax don't put me off neither, again won't be doing many miles and probably not going to be touched much during winter like my last one.

I'm going to view the Silver one at Invictus next week, the Black one from Motorhub I'm probably not going to pursue, they haven't even returned calls/emails so screw them.

Higher mileage doesn’t bother me too much either and to be fair, with the right tools neither does the servicing. I am currently watching Vanos rebuilds on YouTube - whilst daunting they don’t look impossible, just fiddly and time consuming. I imagine it would be very rewarding to do yourself when it is required.

Anyone looking for an MC, this is definitely worth a look at. Think price is reasonable & most importantly history looks spot on.

MOT history looks good. Exhaust emissions problem around 10 years ago, seems to be sorted. Missed an MOT in 2017.

I think that one was on Collecting Cars recently, couldn't of hit it's reserve.

It's a shame people are so hung up on mileage in the UK especially.
My z4m is on 104k with rod bearings done within last few months but when I advertised it at 12k a few weeks back I had a couple of people private message me saying it was a too high mile overpriced car.

That seem a decent price, i had assumed z4mc would have risen further given recent used price trends.

It's so weird that cars like that don't get snapped up. Z4Ms were already undervalued before this weird rise in used cars prices, they're even better value now! :?

Agreed. As far as yours is concerned, 104k with bearings done seems a very fair ask imho.

Cat D in 2007, when it’s a 2006 does make me question the “light damage” statement. Light damage is a few £k to repair. I’d be very surprised if this was written off over a few £k when it was only a year old. However it is fairly priced taking that into consideration. Just get a thorough check over from an Indy prior to purchase.
