How to remove Airbox? (Gruppe M Install)

Post by Andy » Sun Sep 26, 2010 5:41 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help me with how to remove the oem airbox? There's (at least) 2 funny plastic clips which have an arrow on them, as if you need to twist them 90deg to release but they seem pretty fixed.

They're at the bottom of the pic here but you can't quite see the arrows.

TIA !

Are they those expansion-type fixings BMW sometimes use?

Try gently slipping a flatblade screwdriver in underneath the centre piece (that looks like the top of a nail) and see if you can gently prise it up. If you can, you should then be able to pull the whole thing out using only your fingers....

Hi Dave, don't think so as they're holding it down.. I've tried leavering against the outer rim but it's rubber so won't do it.

It's 7 & 8 here:

I'm sure it's easy & obvious, just don't want to break anything whilst I don't know...

Was worrying too much, the lower section of the box just pulls off and they pull through the rubber grommets.

Now - I need to remove the "Rectification Honey Cam" from the "original cleaner case" - the circular metal gauze - but in big letters on the top of the filter it says "Do Not Remove" .... will I be destroying my original airbox lid? :( Can't see any other way to separate to remove the gauze bit.

Not sure why I always start these things when it's getting dark on a Sunday...

The perma-filter bit prizes out.. then it's all easy. The bottom of the aforementioned grommet clip thingys twist 90deg then pull out, so you can secure it to the chassis.

Is anyone still reading? Will post pics tomoro, but it sounds fab 8)

Not as loud as I thought, which is a good thing - but then the H&S exhaust is pretty loud already. The airbox almost completes the noise - adds treble and mid to the bass, & having the noise in front of you makes it stereo.

Expensive, but another mod that really should have been done before it left the factory

Andy, after the H&S and the Gruppe M airbox will the car benefit from a reprogram of the ECU? Must have changed the power delivery enough to make it worth thinking about to maximise your mods?

Yes I was thinking this, problem is it's horifically expensive really.

It's always lingered in my mind that mine has some wierd map anyway, as my Indi says the dates of the ecu flash are all wierd, & it was such an early car used for the launch in america, wouldn't surprise me if it was a bit rich - i swear my MPG figures are well down on most too.

Sammyz - fancy a swap test any time soon? do 30m or something in each others', see what difference (if any) we notice? I trust you not to pop it :)

& Byron - have to admit, driving it last night with the roof down and the new induction noise present made me start thinking about forced induction again. I can see why the seller of the Gruppe M wanted to pass it on for a SC instead..

I'm really starting to think I will *never* sell this car 8)

good on you andy....... mines a keeper, well it is now.... cant wait to hear it matey... right i going to hopefully book you on a curborough under my dads membership, up for it??? i believe its the end of october, will you let me no matey, the ess tune is really good mate, but i reckon i may be able to get you alittle discount, i can ask roman maybe if you want, bear in mind simpson have the kit to do the flash on site, i think you would benefit massively on fuel consumption, plus you got cool features such as sport button memory ( so it stays on if you leave it on) much better torque in the mid range, also top speed limiter removed....

are you happy with the gruppe M?

It's fab... not really used it much yet, it's missing a bolt to secure it so until I've had chance to fit it down (with the brace) it's not gonna get much of a kicking. It does want a remap, thats for sure.. but the last figures I saw were about £600 and it's not worth that to me, at least not this year.

Sport Button Memory would be awesome though, if only you could do the same with the DSC ... save me two clicks every fire-up.

Defo up for Curborough - will PM you - but having spoken to Rage I'm going to try and organise a Bedford /M day too.. that would kick ass 8)

So just fitting mine, but the spacer is to small to fit over the honeycomb filter, any ideas?

Did it!

Top tip, when removing the top rubber mount, opposed to using a sxrewdrive to force it up (I damaged mine) just twist it 90 and remove.

As for the spacer and metal ring, this is a better write up:
