Shim report

Post by Rossm09 » Fri Jun 25, 2021 6:40 pm

So just had inspection two done at main dealer, got a good rate as work for another garage owned by the same franchise so get a good rate, however Tbh I had a awful experience with them which shocked me given working in the same group would expect us to look after one and another kind of attitude,
Anyway I had requested the report on the valve clearance check - it didn’t come with the invoice so I asked about it and got send a new invoice break down with the following written in it
‘ Inlet all cylinders within tolerance except for Cylinder 2 inlet which needed 1.84mm added and adjustment. Tolorance is between 0.18 and 0.23mm. Outlet within tolorance between 0.28 and 0.33 except for Cylinder 5 needed 2.12mm added and adjusted’
Never had a report so does this sound right as I was expecting something more elaborate tbh
Cheers

Looks fine to me.

They checked the clearances and adjusted where necessary. Part of getting a good rate is not making the mechanic waste time writing down every single valve clearance measurement and then enter it into a comprehensive report...

Okay cool, obviously I can see adjustments made but just wondered if the kind of tolerances and adjustments quoted were logical or if it seemed a bit vague not having had a report done before, just wanted to put my mind at ease 👍

Got similar report feedback at Darren Wood on recent inspection 2 service.

That amount of adjustment is huge, and why on only two valves? Have they added 2.12mm or am I misunderstanding? I’d want to understand why it was so far out.

I read it to be this is what the gap should be and we have fitted this to make it correct. they have not said what the one was.

The amount adjustment isn't huge. They will simply have removed the old shim and replaced it with one that gives the correct clearance between the can and follower. The shims come in a range of sizes from something like 1.5mm to 2.5mm
