Coughing/Spluttering S54 from 3000k revs and above only
Hi guys.
New to the forum today as had an issue with my Z4MR.
Had an oil service this week on Tuesday at an Indy BMW specialist. Drove the car a couple times since only short distances & only two days ago did a couple pulls to check every was fine - No problems then.
Today I’ve driven the car under 3k revs for 15/20 mins then got past 3k and it’s coughing/spluttering like I’m on/off the gas. Has anyone had similar before? No lights on the dash & not plugged it into a ODB reader as of yet.
I’ve seen a few posts that it could be the ECU, I wonder if it’s been flashed etc when resetting the service counter.
Also MAF sensors, coils & plugs come to mind.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

You need to get it scanned to avoid guessing, that gets expensive.

This, could be numerous things. Not sure what you mean by ECU ‘flashed’ but I doubt it’s anything to do with the ECU (or DME). Very rare to have issues in that department.

I'd agree with the other posts above, possible coil packs but could be anything really. Get a diagnostic machine plugged into it, that'll give you a good starting point to find the fault. As I'm sure you know already, short journeys are not ideal in this type of car, I tried to avoid those like the plague.
Sure it'll be fine

There’s a few things but it could be coils and spark plugs. The car runs worse on Bosch spark plugs over NGK. My car was hesitating new spark plugs and solved it. Mine had Bosch and replaced with NGK.
Could be numerous things so def worth heading to a specialist.
What mileage is it on and when was the last time it had an inspection?

My initial thoughts were the same coils or spark plugs. Noted regarding the NGK over the Bosch ones. A week ago it had oil service at local Indy close to myself but previous inspection was 2019 and Insp 2 from a previous owner at Indy BMW. Since then I purchased the car and mileages is only around 3k since Insp 2 plus valve clearances and shims about 14 months ago.tomscott wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 11:14 am There’s a few things but it could be coils and spark plugs. From memory/experience (and the limited description given), the things it could be are:
You really need to read/reset the codes (and then read them again), or give it to a specialist to do the diagnosis for you.
- MAF sensor
- Front or rear O2 sensor(s)
- Intake boot leak
- Coils
- Spark Plugs
- VANOS
- ECU damage
- Bad fuel

I'd add cam position sensor to that list also. Hopefully you'll have some error codes stored to throw more light on it.mmm-five wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 4:02 pm From memory/experience (and the limited description given), the things it could be are:I'm lucky that I've only had #1-#3 of those in my ownership.

Plugged OBD reader in today & had two codes P110D & P1633 throw up.
The top throttle position sensor is directly above the oil filter housing so I was thinking its been removed without disconnecting the battery when I had my oil service at the Indy BMW last week.
Reset no codes but similar when driving. I cleaned the sensor & MAF sensor with Carb cleaner to check it oil or dirt might be affecting. Its slightly better as revs up to 4/5 but then coughing so I've ordered a new top throttle sensor from BMW to try out tomorrow.
Sport mode has no impact on the throttle response either.
