Ess 550 supercharger

Post by lewis_jennings » Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:43 am

Hi all,

Im back again scheming about a supercharger, and i have a question for people in the know.

The ess 550 kit for e46 m3, will it fit our z4m's easily enough, and what kind of work is to be expected?

Reason being is i saw this kit on ebay for 5k,which to me sounds pretty reasonable, but theres always hidden costs etc.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203216864677

I'm so clueless I'm not even sure what i should be asking exactly lol. But would welcome any thoughts at all!

Thanks

For anyone interested. Seems i got my answer.

This was from ESS

"There are a lot of differences, so this is not really a cost effective
option vs buying a new Z4M kit I am afraid.

-Different software/injectors
-Z4M kit gets a completely new oil cooler system to make room for the
intercooler
-The intercooler is different in size and has tabs for the Z4M specific
oil cooler
-Intercooler plumbing is different
-Supercharger intake system is different
-Blow off valve is different"

I was toying with the idea of the ESS kit but decided to go down the CSL airbox and Supersprint exhaust manifold route. The whole reason the S54 motor has such a cult following is due to its special naturally aspirated qualities. Adding forced induction seems sacrilege to me now. You really harm the resale value, of lets face it, an appreciating classic.

Well thats issue im having too haha.
Have that internal conflict! But theres just something about the idea of 500hp or so. The more i get used to the car the more im looking for more power

Thinking back i just sold my 3.0i, and probably should have just kept it and turboed it! And kept the z4m stock. But too late

That’s ok - adding 200hp to my ///MC through supercharging wouldn’t seem like sacrilege at all

Feels nothing like sacrilege here! oem like install in the engine bay.... exactly the same curves on the hp and Tq figures just moved a good few notches up the graph! The best mod ive ever done. EVER. would i do this again. Never... it was a one off but i'm glad i did! Cant wait to get back in the car in spring. Got absolutely nothing else to look forward too bar work so right now the idea of hot wheeling to work in summer feels immense.

I agree. Great mod and becomes a total weapon. Wouldn’t do it again tho as it becomes harder to drive. I feel 450 would be good.
