Dan's New Z4M Coupe!

Post by Ed Doe » Fri Sep 04, 2020 10:47 am

Would 8.5j not be a bit skinny for the rear? I'm running 10j Rear and 8.5j fronts and tbh I wish the fronts were 9j really! 8.5J rears on an M would probably look a bit odd, and it's probably why you need such large spacers so the wheels aren't lost in the arches...

Actually, if you're wanting to see what a similar spec (18 x 8j ET42 Style 224M Front) Alloy looks like on the rear of the Z4m, there's a shonky Z4MC that's been floating about for sale for bloody ages which for some reason has 224M Fronts fitted to the rear... https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing ... Hi,

Firstly that is an awesome colour, and makes me feel like I paid to much for my car.... :(

Anyway I'll check my paperwork as I saw spacers on an invoice and assume they are for the rears. But you are right they do look skinny.

So after getting a hold of teh garage, they are finally doing the bearings all in one go, so the car will be almost perfect apart from a loose lamp in the near side head light and a few small jobs. Just need to brace myself for the bill!!!

Don't feel like you paid too much - that car has 130k on the clocks, it's got the wrong alloys fitted, and at the very minimum (having not seen the car in the metal) those headlights look like they've suffered pretty significant water ingress. If you were gonna get a track car it wouldn't be a bad basis, but if it were me I'd be budgeting the best part of 8k to as a minimum sort the rod bearings, cams, followers, vanos, and inspect the bores etc, as well as upgrading suspension and brakes. But for an original sunny-day toy I think it's too high mileage and has too much evidence of incorrect care to be a 'sensible purchase'.

I suppose, Mine is on 90K and I reckon (Still not had an accurate quote from the garage) About £3k for all the bearing work, INS1, brake system, lines, links ABS etc. But hopefully that will be it sorted.

Just need to sort teh headlight, do a gearbox oil change and de badge...

I would also ask for a bit more detail on the scope of work - could well be 3k if the ABS unit is being replaced, as well as the lines to it, and an insp1 with shims, on top of rod bearings. Rod Bearings alone should be in the region of £1000-1200 depending on whether OE Bearings & Bolts or ACL/similar and ARP Bolts are used....

I wouldn't be too surprised if all that did start to approach £3K.

I only got away with less than £1K for my replacement ACL bearing shells because I supplied the oil!

And my Inspection 2 got past 4 figures because a few extra issues were spotted that needed to be addressed like a leaking/sticking cam-chain tensioner and knackered RTABs.
Coupes because stunning!

Fair enough, not read the rest of the thread on what needs replacing but I guess if that kind of stuff is being replaced then yeah could nudge that way (though not sure why you'd need a new ABS unit, recon surely?).

Hi All,

The Bearing work is just over £1100. The rest of the work is:

Rear Disc's
Rear sensors
OSF Brake pipe from ABS Block
All brake lines replaced to HEL lines
NSF Headlamp tube / washer
Rear ABS reluctor rings (Rubbing)
NSF Anti roll bar link
Vanos clean up and check
Replace A/C belt
Carry out Inspection 1
Replace number plate lights
Wind up rear suspension (to increase arch gap)
Re fit front bumper (Mis aligned when MOT replaced brake disc shield)

Plus labour to do all this

Full inspection of car (Which highlighted the above and a broken OFS lamp in headlight)

I didn't get a 996/996 to avoid large garage bills.....

Fair, probably about right price wise then. Who you got doing it?

A local Firm that in fairness did a really good repair on my 520D when BMW Portsmouth buggered the oil cooler. And teh owner is my neighbours mate, so I thought it would be plain sailing.

But the quoting, communication and agreement to / of work has been painful. I'll let you know next week how it goes.

Hang on. You've taken an S54 for inspection 1 to an non-specialist garage? Eep, rather you than me :(

RL are a BMW specialist, and do sales. The owner and his techs are EX BMW Plymouth (Ocean) I'm not that cheap...

Wasn't suggesting you were being cheap - just concerned as a few people in the past have taken these cars to have specialist work done at any old garage, and got their fingers burnt!

Glad to hear you've taken it to a BMW Specialist, you shouldn't have any issues

No worries Ed, I know what you mean. This car has made me realise that when speaking to the garage, it is reassuring to hear them mention the specifics about the engine as I want to keep it as OEM and well maintained as possible . It will not be at any Kwik fits or Prodrive garages that's for sure.

TBH all the good BMW garages are in Exter and Bristol, which is not a million miles away, but it is the Faff of dropping it off and collecting again.

I can see how buying an expensive car and running one are two different things. If it was my only car I would be buggered!
