This is it! I had a TVR Sagaris and the first week I was so disappointed, then after a while I drove it like I stole it and it all came together. The Z4M is one of those cars.
Ooo a Sagaris. Always wanted to try one every since I spent ages driving and rewatching one on PGR3, back in the day. I love the style of that car.

If yours still scares you I obviously have a long way to go!

Mine can scare me - which is probably why I find it so exciting.

I enjoyed his review and I agree with him that it is a very flawed car. I'm probably overly harsh on the Z4MR because I had a TVR Cerbera 4.5 before it though. The TVR was noisy and it had a massive sense of occasion about it, the Z4M didn't have that for me in comparison.

Throw in the frustrating gearbox(especially 1st to 2nd) plus the overly harsh ride...and that made it a disappointing car for me. The Z4M can be a nightmare to drive on uneven tarmac and a bumpy road in my experience.

Having said that I did really like the engine and the 2 seater special feeling around it, plus it is an event to drive. In this day and age of auto gearboxes and 4wd...it does make the Z4M a very different and interesting car for sure. 8)

By the way I thought that the OP's car sounded lovely in the video. I thought mine was far too quiet as standard even with the roof down.

I have to admit that I agree with just about everything in that review.

I'm not a fan of Jayemm's videos particularly, but he hit the nail on the head. I bought mine after a long history driving Porsches, which were undoubtedly more capable. But GT3s aside, none of them have the character that you get from a roadster with such a glorious engine.

I bought my because it was a roadster and also that it just loves to be driven at 8/10ths. It's just a wonderful almost old school device to enjoy.

Thanks! I particularly love the intake. The exhaust is good, but a bit boomy around 2K revs.

I think he got this one very wrong, the car is much better to drive hard than it is to drive slow.

At higher revs the gearbox springs nicely between gears, the engine is all about revs and becomes an animal towards the redline, and the steering which feels heavy and numb at low speeds provides much needed feedback when pressing on. It's almost as if he etched his belief in general about roadsters being soft onto the car to the point where he may as well not have driven it. Having been in a z4mr on track, it's scary how capable and composed it was, just losing out to a well driven cayman gt4.

Personally I agree 100% with your view. It seems to me he’d condemned the car from the start and was searching in vain to alter his views as much for the owner as anything, as he didn’t treat the car how it’s meant to be treated and for that matter is more than capable of being treated, there’s no way this guy can form his opinion driving it like Miss Daisy. I fully agree the OE suspension is crap but throw on some KWV3’s for eg, and I think there’s a hell of car in there full of character and something that you just can’t get these days for the outlay.

Good coverage for the zed, crap review. Funny how everyone on YouTube thinks they are Clarkson these days.

Just to add, not good for potential owners is it.

I don't think that it changes much to be fair. The Z4MR has always had a few mixed reviews anyway. Plus if you want boring and predictable competence...you can always buy a Porsche Boxster anyway!

Very nice looking car and gratulations!
Can’t really stand the guy Jay tho, seems like he’s brought up on Top Gear or something. ”More noise than content” and seem a bit full of himself. Also funny how he fails to mention the strut-brace mod AS IT IS IN THE FRAME. 😄

Always nice to see a Z4M on the tube after all!

He's very similar in looks/style to Jason Dawe...who presented Top Gear with Clarkson & Hammond before he was replaced by James May.

It seemed too subjective for a widely watched review. He likes the roadster because it can be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace (8-10), whereas the coupe was only enjoyable at full chat. I do agree with that, as coming from a roadster, the roadster can be enjoyed at all speeds. That's something that I miss with the coupe.

However, both roadster and coupe are great at the upper end of the limit. Just because he doesn't like driving them at the top end where you have to concentrate and drive with a decent ability, doesn't mean they're no good at the top end. I know I'm not alone in feeling that these things give you a great rush at high revs, and really come alive. Needing to actually drive them is the main reason I like mine. He was almost making out that they're more of a GT car ... float along the lanes using the 2.5-4.5k rev range; this they are not. :driving:

I currently have a 370Z Roadster and that is more of a GT car. The Z4M is almost the complete opposite but in a good way for me. The top end rush of the S54 engine is a fantastic experience for sure. :driving:

I'd argue that the Z4M gets better the harder you drive it(although the ride/suspension you do have to be aware of), the 370Z gets worse the harder you drive it in comparison. The 370Z is really a car that suits a more laid back approach I reckon.
