Wing Mirror anti glare

Post by Angelus666 » Sun Dec 29, 2019 9:17 pm

Hey, can anyone recommend the correct film to apply to the wing mirrors? Mine are plain glass and some of the new Mercedes lights reflections are like a laser beam burning your retinas.... :cry:

My blue tinted ones from eBay helps a lot, surprisingly. I only bought it for the looks which I prefer, and that was a nice little bonus.

Saw this thread and liked the look of these so ordered a pair.

How do you fit them though, Lucas? The backs have small clip-in tabs while the OE mirror has a rotating plastic collar. Is this where you say you had a mate fab you a custom collar out of aero-grade titanium? :P

It just clips on, not as elegant/ultra-secure as the OEM solution, but works well enough. You don't park in London streets anymore, so you don't need to worry about people clipping your wing mirror and the glass falling off :rofl:

You'll need to undo some of the loom tape so the wires reach the connectors on the glass (so add an extra minute for the installation haha)

edit: Aren't your wing mirrors auto-dimming? Are you giving them up because of the price of new glass for those?

Yeah, exactly. Eye watering! It’s a shame - the dimming worked really well and I didn’t realise until today that they took a feed from the same sensor as the rear view mirror. Neat.

These blue ones do look a lot better though. I’ll take a proper look at some point, but there were a couple of issues I ran into this morning before heading to Sunday Scramble - the four pairs of tabs didn’t quite line up with the slots in mirror back plate (spacing looked about right but they were rotated around a few degrees) and two of the pairs needed the inner plastic “pillars” trimming off. Stupidly I trimmed them before realising the slots didn’t quite line up. :roll:

Hmm, on second thoughts, does it clip around the edges of the circular back plate that stays in the mirror cowling when you take the mirror glass out, rather that into slots on the plate itself? In my haste I may have totally misjudged it all.

I believe so. It's been a few months since I replaced mine, but what you said now rings a bell, whereas what you said before made me slightly confused.

It does do that, it clips over rather than in....

Yep, sorted!

What was quite neat was that there was a little clip to hold the unused auto-dimming plug:

I like the blue although since these fit I might see if E87 and E90 (facelift) auto-dimmers are an option for a proper fix in the future. It’s a great feature but mine are properly shot (see below) and £550 for replacements is insane.

I guess you could probably get a bit of change from £500 if you searched around. Part numbers 51167177125 and 51167177126.

@MrPT, @Angelus666, @lucasxdiniz,

How are you finding the anti-glare feature of these mirrors? I too am suffering with the "laser beam to the eyes" treatment from those driving behind me, which doesn't make for ideal driving conditions!
