Yes just over 49k serviced regularly too more than suggested mileage.Cannot guarantee what oil was used from previous owners (as i dont know them or what the dealers used )or how they drove the car I would like to think with care when cold until fully warmed up but wouldnt every owners like to think that. Suffice to say why I was eager to get the work done.I am a bit OCD and wanted peace of mind.On the positive the mechanic did say the engine was really healthy very very clean sump.Nice crank clean top end inlets Nice chain guides .Very quiet on start up and on Inspection 2 said apart from a slight leak in diff (Which we changed) it was spotlessly clean (changed worn engine mount also)
Rear brake pipes had obviously been previously changed as well as the belts.I am not sure how much wear is acceptable or how rapid the deterioration is and at what point they fail but on these engines well worth getting them changed.

You’ve got me worried about my bearings! I’ve tried to contact your chap on Fbook but no response... is it best to call him?

I have Z4MR only 55k but I want to keep it as my only car until 75k (should be around 3-4 years as I don’t do many miles) then it will be a summer car indefinitely I can’t see myself ever selling it. So as preventative I am thinking at the very least I’m going to get the bearings and Vanos looked at and probably replaced/repaired. I’ve had the auxiliary belt, and an inspection 2 done in the last 1,500 miles and tolerances were all ok, I was told it’s a very good example... but I am still thinking the risk is worth the up front investment considering the length of time I plan to keep the car. I also plan to do oil servicing every 8,000 or so, but an engine failure isn’t a risk I want to take as I’ve heard horror stories.

What prompted you to get all the above looked at? Did you add to the original plan after an inspection from Darragh or were you having problems in advance?

He has replied on FB, I’m going to book in rod bearings and Vanos and then have him look at other bits when he has the car. Just not worth the risk on the car developing major faults. (I’m very OCD as well) had it 2 months and it’s already my pride and joy, when only 1,500 of the 55,000 Miles are mine and it hadn’t had an Inspection 2 when I bought it (has now) I want to make sure the things sticks with me for the long haul. Thanks for the detail, very helpful.

Yes mine had been serviced about 1000 miles before I got the car but I wanted to have a specialist take a good look at the car and do any outstanding jobs.As well as me wanting to get the rod bearings and bolts done due to The s54 m3 bearing wear issues. On inspection the diff was leaking from pinion so this was sorted as well as engine mounts slightly perished false economy not to do this when the car was being worked on.I spent 2 days cleaning while darragh worked his socks off on the car.  and a fesh diff gearoil and 10 60 oil service done feel like the car has had some well deserved surgery.

I’ll update this thread if I get it booked in on what I end up having done! Thanks again.

Just a thought, but before I went to view an MC that had done 92,000 miles I asked my BMW Indy about rod bearing shells, and rather than jumping right into replacing them he recommended getting a sample of oil analysed when it had it's next oil change.

The rationale being that the analysis would identify whether there was any bearing material in the oil.

FWIW he is ex-Sytner and looks after quite a few M models - including at least 2 forum members!

But I suppose if you want ultimate peace of mind getting them replaced is the best option.

What bearings and bolts did you go for out of interest? What did Darragh say about running them in?

King race bearings Apr rod bolts. He recommended them and fits them to his race built m engines.
As for running in he said some people give it beans from fitting as it's not a fresh engine build but as a precaution recommend 500 miles at below 4k rpms before hard driving. Then servicing at around 6000 miles. They don't need a oil change after 1000 miles. The filter and sump will pick up any swarf.

Cheers. Thinking might go OEM rod bolts though, otherwise King seems like a good choice

Either way you go is better than not going at all.
No harm in refreshing the engine.
