As to if it is repaired and back on the road , will be debatable. Depends on underlying unknown damage. He will watch in come in and advise me on anything that comes to light on it. He has the reg number and has obviously seen the car.
Think i'd be searching the new one out sadly
Thanks very much for looking into this. Sadly I think you and your neighbour are right. Time to move on and wait for dreaded payout haggling with the insurance company. Seen a few horror stories on the forum about them using glasses guide and severely undervaluing low mileage M's.

Been considering options for another car today. Thought of all sorts, but all roads lead back to another MR for me so far. Everything else out there in the same price range is either too slow or too ugly. I think the M's hit the perfect niche so in my current frame of mind, it has to be another :D

Well I suppose an MR would keep coming up top as you hadn't had yours that long.

Happy hunting.

And I hope the insurers come up with a sensible valuation!

So, quick interim update for you all.

Received a letter from one of the vehicle's insurers today admitting fault, and offering to cover injury compensation / vehicle repairs / total loss payout - which is a good start.

My insurer has viewed all evidence including dash cam footage from the vehicle in front, and confirmed that I'm not at fault - also great news.

The engineer has seen pictures of the vehicle and has apparently placed such a high value on it, they now think it's repairable (doubtful). They can't 100% confirm until the engineer has properly assessed the vehicle. They've come to this conclusion despite the fact that their engineer placed the damage in one of their highest categories. My insurer has told me that this is a sign that the engineer has placed a significantly high value on my car.

I hope this could mean that if I'm looking at a total loss, they won't mess me around with valuation. I have to say, they've been very pleasant to deal with thus far. They've also reassured me that the engineer probably acknowledges the uselessness of the glasses guide, hence wanting to see the car in the flesh.

Car is currently at ASM auto recycling in Aylesbury, on an un-manned overflow site. Vultures make note for when it goes to auction or is broken for parts :poke:

Just as a note my previous MR was written off and I was able to buy it back for 20% of the write off value, usually the engine in these is worth more than that alone so if you can be bothered with the hassle you may be able to turn a profit on the salvage.

I sold mine for £2k more than I bought it back for as is and could have probably doubled my money if I had parted it out 👌🏽

We're nearly reaching a conclusion.

Update from the engineer today was that the car is a total loss. OSF chassis leg kinked, steering rack / suspension arms all screwed. Similar story on the back as well, so all in all the "liberal" estimate for repairs is £27k!

The engineer had already done his homework on how valuable the car is and I was very happy with their offer, so accepted it. The insurance company have so far been fantastic to deal with and have blown all of my preconceived ideas out of the water. Long may it continue.

The only thing to wait for now is full acceptance of liability from other parties, so they can confirm that my excess / NCB will be left alone.

Lesson learned and next time, full protected NCB will be added to my policy, along with agreed value on the new car just to be safe.

I guess it's probably because the premiums are probably pooled in the same place for the UK, so the industry loses out if that makes sense.

Well they will no doubt say its simply due to your being involved :( but how can you argue with a whole industry that you were only involved simply through someone else's fault :( its common sense to us who pay for cover but to them its simply a way of upping your next premium .
You can't hide from it , one of the first questions asked on getting a quote is generally " have you had any accidents or claims in the last 5 years regardless of fault "

That is a pretty quick resolution OP! Presumably you would recommend that insurer.

Awesome news. Sad to see such a lovely car end up being broken, but there are cars around as John above proves , still available. Hopefully you will be back on the road very soon in a new car :driving:

Statistically, if you're involved in one accident your more likely to be involved in another. Feels unfair, but probably true.
