Recently I’ve been reading a lot, probably too much, about the S54 Vanos issues, and all it’s left me feeling is concerned ha.
Has anybody actually experienced an issue with their Vanos on the Z4M S54?
I was always under the impression that many engine issues were resolved by the time it came to the Z4. However, the cam bolts seem concerning, and do the exhaust gear tabs. Based on Mr Vanos’ advice.
I’m wondering if being proactive on a complete refurb is required? My car has only 57k miles. Would I expect anything to be replaced?
Thanks!

Suggest you phone up a well known large specialist, for example Brystones or one of the many others recommended here.
Their advice was if it’s not broke don’t try to fix it, you can potentially upset more than u seek to cure, whereas rod bearings is essential preventative (& therefore necessary) maintenance.
Mines just ticked over 60k last year, where last time I drove her was running evenly & pulling like a train - fingers x will be the same when she leaves hibernation in April

My personal opinion is 'if ain't broke dont fix it'. There will be a whole collection of symptoms to choose from that will tell you your VANOS needs attention as in when it needs attention. For now just keep an eye and an ear for tell tales of any VANOS related issues.
And remember to drive it and enjoy it.

I had mine done recently at Redish as a preventative measure. They found nothing wrong at all with the original setup and said everything was as it should be. That said, it did make an extra 10 bhp compared to its previous run and it was definitely a bit crisper lower down in the rev range.
