Intermittent starting
Really useful this thread, thanks. My M has been doing very similar! Starts first time but when you come to restart it a short while later it’s just a click from the starter and doesn’t fire! Leave it a while and it eventually will but Sooo irritating. Think I have a new starter ordered and see where I go from there

Picked up a new starter ,oe brand 165 inc vat will get some stainless jubilee clips or new oe ones, will I need a tool to spread and tighten those ? Thanks in advancemad4slalom wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:07 pmright then , collecting starter nxt wed so will look forward to doing that. Thanks for your helpful advicejohn-e89 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 10:11 pmNo it’s quite straightforward Mad4, mine hasn’t been off before so had the original clips on the intake trumpet rubbers, they’re tight and you need to squeeze them together to release them or prise them carefully. I’ll be using stainless steel jubilee clips to refit so don’t worry too much. Then it’s just a case of undoing the air pipes and maf sensor, two nuts under the air box and it’s off. Trust me it’s soooooooo much easier than going from underneath. If you’ve not done it before half an hour will see it off.

There is a tool available from BMW yes, but it's expensive for what it is. I ground a pair of £3 wire crimpers down at the end to grip the clips which works just fine. Otherwise I think this type of tool might do the trick...

Where are people buying the starters from. My M has just started doing this. I get a click and nothing. Try a few times and she starts fine.
By coincident the two times its happened its been on my drive with the bonnet facing up a slight incline.
