Vanne, huge respect for the work, but got to ask....why didn't you just buy a GT3...? Is it more the fun of the project, or do you want a proper performance-focused car?

If you ever reconsider removing the air con just watch the Top Gear episode where James May drives the Vantage N24 and you’ll remember why you need it

Lol thanks guys..

Angelus,
Ive driven the gt3rs, and its an amazing car, I don't want to take anything away from that at all, totally amazing car, and can make a very average driver into a seemingly awesome driver.. (thats me, I am pretty average lol, but learning all the time) and THAT car is sooo easy to drive.. just insanely easy..

My zed on the other hand... IS NOT!

its a handful to say the least, it really is.. but... if you run a good lap in it, its rewards are far FAR greater than turning in a 3 seconds a lap faster one in the RS. My mates RS really is a nice machine, but its not my zed, and his is as bone stock as you can get (no need for any mods in that thing, its just THAT good)

I came out of his RS like I went for a Sunday stroll on the beach (lol as close as I could get on it, without obviously worried id be working for the next year for free, if I put it in the guard rail  ) , while doing 3 laps in my zed see's me soaked my t-shirt in sweat.

As far as a drivers car goes, ill take my zed over the GT3RS any day. Once more, not trying to take anything away from the amazing machine that that gt3rs is. It really is.. That and the fact I can't afford one to save my life..lol

I am sure my wife wouldn't agree... (esp with all the s**t and parts that are now littering my driveway/car port) :tumbleweed:

Great idea of a thread.

There is a steel frame that the dash is mounted on which weighs about 6kg. You'd need to check whether it was structural, but perhaps you can remove that? Looks like it supports a lot of bits that you don't really care about any more!

Absolutely mad but fair play if its what you want to do.
I cant help thinking that this project would have been better suited starting with a write off/cat c d though

What about all the Roadster reinforcments behind the seats etc..? Lots of metal...
At least that cross structure should do with some lightening.

yeah if it's purely a track car I'd be doing that and reintroducing the chassis stiffness with a cage ala gt4. I suspect you won't save any weight but the chassis would be even stiffer and more importantly safer.

Are you removing your bumper bars vanne? they weigh quite a lot and the front one in terms of weight distribution in particular would be nice to get rid of, but maybe a bit dangerous?! It's a shame the e46m3 kevlar one won't fit (well I think it doesn't) as that doesn't weigh a lot at all.

That's my old GT4 shell, not sure why it got stripped down, but it was incredibly stiff with that cage in, stiff without probably. The cage was by Weichers IIRC, and they do a variety of cages and half cages.

I think though a lot of the stiffness in the standard shell comes from the rear bulkhead? If you cut that away to save weight I'm not sure that would be a fantastic idea, mind you a half cage might do the job. Need somewhere to mount the harness eyelets so needs to be something pretty strong there really.

Rear bulkhead is staying guys, the goal all along has been to mod/change, but always in mind that a reversion to stock has to be possible.

The rear bulkhead does add torsional stiffness, but I think a lot of the beam and torsional strength is derived from the deep tunnel and extra thick metal work in the sills, It was designed as a roadster IIRC, so it is extra stiff on the coupes!
