I'm in the US. I've got a really clean 2007 Z4M Roadster that I quite like. I live in a decent neighborhood so didn't worry about parking in the driveway (top up). So, of course, someone attempted to break into the car. They appear to have inserted a clothes hanger above the passenger window sill and extend it to the center and yanked on the plastic panel covering the latching(?) mechanism. The result was a very damaged piece of plastic where the top meets the window, and a scarred window seal - I'll know more once Hurricane Flo passes and the estimator can do his job. I assume the idea was minimal damage to the car but to get the parking brake off and into neutral. I've attached a couple of photos.
My curiosity is what the end result would be - could that latch mechanism be shorted or physically yanked out, then allowing the top to be manually opened?

Pah, what amateurs.
I once locked the keys in mine while I was aboard the ferry to the Isle of Skye, about a 40 minute crossing.
Since I was on NHS business the crew put me right at the front so I could scoot away before all the tourists Which meant that my car was blocking the exit from the ferry and nobody could get off... I had visions of being tossed into the Minch and left for the dolphins, however 2 guys from the engine room came up, one with a sort of sucker thing that they grabbed the window with and pulled and the other with a bit of flexible rod that they used to push the unlock button on the dash. Car was back open in 5 minutes with no damage at all.
A well deserved case of beer to the crew on the return journey and I've never been so stupid again. Sorry for the damage to your Z4, looks like it'll be a new roof at least.

Grrrrr... I feel your pain. I wish someone cuts off their hands. I have alarm, gps tracker, disc lock and another one two surprises for them. However none of the above prevented my car to be vandalised by some morons. Quick recovery.

They'd never open the top like that, Not in a month of Sundays.
You need to insert and turn an Allen key to release both the latches. They'd have had more success pulling the coat hanger on the door handles

Which would be deadlocked.
Does make you wonder what they were trying to do exactly.
