Rare coupes

Post by jimmybell » Mon Sep 10, 2018 10:13 pm

I think some of the stats in here are a bit... overblown. I think there's a difference between rare car and rare spec ...the market compares total numbers built to determine if a car is rare (thus value may increase), not colour and spec combos.

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/bmw_z4_m

Saying that - i'd only ever buy an Imola one again, shame i dont have a garage with power and a ramp to store one forever.
V12 Vantage S - Hammerhead Silver, Manual, Lightweight Wheels, Exterior Carbon++, Carbon Buckets, AMR Performance Pack.
M135i LCI - ZF8, White, HK Audio, Adaptive

According to the Z3MC Forum - Total Z3MCs sold in the UK 609. (S50 492, S54 117)

The S54 Z3MR totals only 73 but the values are still lower than the Coupe.
The reason that the M Coupe (E36) was built was because a small group of BMW engineers wanted to correct the scuttle-shake and inherent weakness of the ragtop Z3 chassis, and they succeeded in creating the stiffest BMW chassis made at that time.

Although a Z3M Roadster has a S54 engine, the chassis still suffers the inherent weakness of a ragtop so there's no real comparison between the Z3 M Coupe and the Z3 M Roadster and the market reflects this. Likewise, the earlier S50 M Coupes do not attract the same prices as the later S54 model.

Well some people ‘do see red’ sometimes, wonder what they’d do if it was something important.

Being rare is subjective, where I would include colour as important especially if desirable & produced in lower numbers, spec less so... & if we all thought the same be so boring

I suppose unless you owned your car from new, we're all at the mercy of what the original owner deemed as desirable. The fact that colours such as White, PY and Sepang were not seen as desirable at the time, has only served to make them rare and increased their perceived desirability. Hindsight is a wonderful thing :D

Can't imagine why!
2008 Z4MC: heavy wheels | crap suspension | skittish rear end | wobbly engine | not enough induction noise | underwhelming turn in | inconsistent braking | lardy battery | chubby steering wheel

I really like the front bumper with the flippers but the rest of the stuff is tacky.

And even then, rarity is not an automatic ticket to a higher sale price. Ask the guys with the handful of 1964 Playmate Pink Mustangs. A friend had a very rare Corvette - a 1965 that had been bought by an owner who distrusted them new fangled disc brakes and ordered his car with drums all around (only year where that option existed) That made it one of 300 odd, but then it also had (IIRC) manual windows, another delete option which in combination with the drums made it a one off. He thought he'd hit the lottery until he found that no one wanted to buy a car that didn't stop well and that you couldn't open the passenger window from the driver's seat.

Generally, while rarity of specific options may make a car easier to sell, it often fails to attract higher prices. And rarity is relative - I have owned or still own cars made in total numbers of 70, 100, 276, 500, 1266, 2000, 3500 etc., all less than the lovely Z4MC (which I also own).

Well based on this database the Z4MC seems to be much rarer than you think in Canada - just 187 of them! http://perso.numericable.fr/tonyz4c/index.html

Interesting - I had thought that there were around 135 MCs that came to Canada. But I'm looking at total production numbers, not how they were distributed, so that is almost 4600 cars, which isn't in the rare category, just a bit scarce.

Nice site for the production numbers, BTW.

There were 8000 Z1’s produced, they are a bit rare now
