Got mine back today Gary and none of mine needed shimming either, all in spec, got my valve report, it’s my friends garage so I know they’ve been checked, bit like taking it to you really, he provided the Engine oil, filter and G/B oil, I provided the valve gasket and diff oil, the air filter and plugs didn’t need changing, I changed those less than 4K miles ago, a couple of ancillary belts, B/F and MOT too for under £500

So Darren Wood are now saying my new alternator is faulty. Not sure what the odds are but I’m pissed off it wasn’t checked before handing it back.

It’s going to BMW under parts warranty to be replaced if it is faulty that is.

To make things worst it’s still randomly cutting out and revs drop low too. I guess this could still be the faulty alternator.

I think I’ll get the alternator checked / replaced under warranty and then head to zed shed for a second opinion.

Exactly, a good engine shouldn’t actually need the valves shimming. But in order to know this the valves have to be checked in the first place.

Dunno about Z4M-2006 interpretation ‘skills’. :?

What’s a ‘good’ engine got to do with it? Shims wear with use?

Not only that but the head can wear also.
Sometimes a quiet engine can mean shims need to be changed as the head can wear and close the valve clearance meaning sometimes there is either no clearance at all or the valve starts to be held open slightly.
It would be unusual but not impossible to not need any shims changed in an engine but if they have supplied proof via a sheet of paper showing what each valve clearance was it goes part way to showing they were checked. The only thing you wouldnt know would be if that info was for your car or not.

Its rare that the S54 doesnt need shimming.Although it does depend on what miles are being done inbetween services of course and overall mileage of engine and how its used.

As said, shims wear, cams wear and you can actually get a bit of valve seat regression, and the valve clearance ends up a little too tight.

I have probably done 20+ valve clearance checks on S54's and everyone i have ever done has needed shims,i think 3 was the least amount.

So my "interpretation" comes from experience, like Daz's though there is always exceptions to the rules.
