Z4m in for Inspection II (Ongoing issues)

Post by Popey » Wed Aug 01, 2018 7:06 pm

So my Z4m is currently in with Darren Wood for inspection and all was going well until... "Mr Pope, you need a new alternator". I had a feeling it was coming due to on going issues. They quoted about £600 fitted, I was on handsfree at the time and didn't catch accurate price but it was about that.

Any thoughts on the Alternator price?

Apart from that its also needed 5 shims and a brake fluid change (£45+VAT)

If that's for a genuine alternator, then it's about right.

I'd also ask for your old one back so that you can get it tested/rebuilt/refurbed and then sold on to recoup some cash.

Non-OE ones (i.e. not Bosch or Valeo) can be bought much cheaper, but i don’t know how good they are.

I know the feeling.

Whilst I was getting my new brakes fitted, we found out that I'd need to cut a shitload of metal out of the rear brake backing plate, would also need spacers & longer bolts for the front, and a new set of HEL rear braided lines (as one supplied had a leak, and were quite a tight fit anyway) :(

Whilst it was there I investigated my dangling wire from the Z4-Forum National meet (along with another destroyed rubber lip spoiler), and found both rear O2 sensor cables were damaged and were giving out no signal - so another £500, plus whatever breaks trying to get 160,000 mile old O2 sensors out from behind 160,000 mile cats (ben told it is easiest to drop the whole exhaust, but hope nothing breaks) :headbang:

Whilst underneath we noticed the power steering pipes were corroded, and the sump was seeping, plus its about due it's annual Inspection 2

Although my man-maths tells me I saved some cash by note having a road-worthy car for my scheduled Ring trip the following weekend, as the parts were either on back-order or being custom made

ETA: more costs coming...just driven home and as usual my lights came on automatically as it got dark enough...or one of them did. Bulbs are only 12 months old, and bought from a member on here! Luckily my originals were only replaced as they were getting a bit dull with age, so will try refitting one and see if it's just a bulb :x

Jesus!!! I don’t feel as bad now.

My zed as been neglected since I got a 4 series as a company car. Partly due to I was sick of the issues which I hope the alternator will solve.

German holidays unfortunately.

It’s why I’m still driving around with an engine management light on (no loss of power, stuttering, or hesitation though).

You can appreciate her all the more for a wee time away. Once that alternator's sorted park the 4 series for a few days and enjoy some proper :driving: :D .

She’s done 300 miles in 2 years

I really want to start enjoying my zed again now. Getting her booked for a proper scrub up is next.

Alternator should be with us for Tuesday next week.

For the record as far as I know we’re having no problems getting parts from Germany other than things on back order.

There's an adapter provided with the CTEK, link it up to the battery and the socket just pops out above the box with the battery in....the boot. Very handy. When I'm away for a while I just plug it in, leave the CTEK in the boot make sure the cable runs over the boot seal and not the lock mech. Then shut the boot and lock the car. Worked really well for the last 5 years!

So the bill is in....

£960 for inspection II, MOT, break fluid and fit alternator.

£470 inc VAT for OEM BMW alternator

I’ve got a few little niggles but I think that will be a trip to the zed shed!
